Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

I just realized I have to drill holes in my new drop spindles to attach dust shields and was told the manufacturer advises against doing this. Not sure why. For those who have converted to discs what did you do?.

Re: Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

leave them off, it's a waist of steel in my opinon. if they get bent they squeel and as far as i'm concerned they just hold in heat and brake dust.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want dust shields on there. I's hogwash to say that they hold heat on the rotor.

Just don't need them unless maybe if you are going to do a lot of offroad, dirt, mud, gravel rough stuff.

Re: Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

What spindles are you using? The ECE spindles have the holes drilled and tapped.

Re: Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

Mine are from GMCPauls and made by McGaugheys. Do the shields protect the backside of the rim from getting dirty?. Will dust keep building up in the shields?. My truck is only driven occasionally so the dust build up should be minimal.

Re: Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

I use them, but the ECE drop spindles bolted right up without any mods to the dust shield. Drop spindles I bought from Performance Online in the past for my 67 El Camino required mods to the dust shield. The spindles were the tall spindles by Heidts and interfered at the back of the shield. I simply bought the dust shields from POL.

Re: Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

I don't see the harm in not putting them on, but they are on my truck. They have never built up any dust on them but I wash the truck so dang much I've never noticed a build-up on the rims either. If the holes aren't there to bolt them on... meh, leave 'em off.

Re: Are you disc brake guys using dust shields???

The purpose of the disc brake shield is:
The dust shield permits air to flow about the rotor for cooling purposes while reducing the contamination of the braking surfaces of the rotor by dirt particles carried by splashed road water and air.

I guess what it all comes down to is if you want them on there. You said that the spindles you purchased aren't designed to hold a dust shield. You have 2 options, use the ones you already bought, or buy new ones that have the neccesary hole to mount dust shields. IMO - if you don't drive the truck that much, and if you wash your truck on a regular basis, just make sure you rinse the rotors off, and you should be fine.
