Re: Finally Starting To Plan A Garage(need some wisdom)
thanks glock, i'm just tryin to decide what building method to use, pole or stud frame. See the thing is, the shop i am dismantling is 27Lx18W, 2 27's and an 18 back wall, it had a full width plywood door on the other end. My plan was to use the walls and with carefull planning and some more lumber end up with a 35x27 shop. I planned this route because i woudn't have to buy as much lumber to keep cost down. But after seeing some pole barns i might go with a 30x40 and use the 27x18 old shop as an addition. i dunno what to do yet, i do know i have pretty much unlimited space, but not a bottomless pocket lol

Hey Bob. Did you see a deer must have run into the side of your pole barn and looks like he has his head stuck. Better check this out...

Re: Finally Starting To Plan A Garage(need some wisdom)
I built a metal build shop on a slab, but I am curious about you folks that do pole barn/building, then poor a slab. How do the supports/poles stand up? I would tend to think that they would rot/deteriorate and make the building unstable. I am not very knowledgeable about wood structure, so I am curious about that aspect.

Re: Finally Starting To Plan A Garage(need some wisdom)
The poles are pressure treated and will last in the ground for decades. The poles are at least 4 feet in the ground IIRC.

Re: Finally Starting To Plan A Garage(need some wisdom)
I've used old poles many times, although now my shop is all metal. The problem with using old tele or light poles is once they're pulled out of the ground after many years of use the bottom section of the pole (around the ground line) will rot faster than you think, so if you go this route be sure to cut out that section.
I work for a electrical utility and have a limitless supply of old poles, so far this has been the only drawback to using them, that and trying to square and plumb them. They also make good fence post.

I think the idea of adding the old shop on as an addition is a great idea. Besides, the price of oil is holding and there's lots of work to pay for it right now right?

Rollie there is lots of holes to drill, but the weather has been real crappy here (rain, snow, freeze, melt, etc) latley so we are constantly gettin shut down due to road bans.

Re: Finally Starting To Plan A Garage(need some wisdom)
I am also wanting to build a shop, I live on 5 acres, so I have lots of room. I wondered the difference in price from a 30X40 to a 40 X 60. and is pole barn type construction as good as steel or regular house type framing?? and how much will it cost for the concrete floor. I am able to do a lot of the work myself, minus the concrete and plumbing. This is going to be a pay as I go project, kinda like my truck, I stay out of debt.
