Should I worry
I rebuilt the rear end, have all the tools to do it, when I put the pinion nut on it was a PITA to get it to tighten, by hand the pinion was sloppy and had play in the bearings, so I had to use the gun, I tightened it slow and got the slop out and it spins free and smooth, with the carrier in I have .006 backlash and the gear pattern looks ok. I know the crush sleave is suspose to be sensitive, but should i worry about not setting the inch lbs on the pinion nut? All parts in the carrier are new.
Thanks Smitty

Re: Should I worry
You must crush, the crush sleeve enough to preload the bearings. If they are at "O" torque they will be loose after about 500 miles of break-in and the .006 backlash will go away.
Remove the pinion nut and wipe some grease on the washer face and the nut and threads. Hammer with the air gun until you get the inch pounds of torque. If it gets to tight, take the smallest ball peen hammer and insert the ball end into the depressed area on the end of the pinion and strike with a BFH, a brass dead blow hammer works best. Repeat until the crush sleeve relaxes. Good Luck!!! |
