Windshield Washer Pump and Reservoir

Hi all,

When I get my truck back from my mechanic this week (went there first to get running, inspected and lubed as I just got it) I am going to replace the washer pump with an electrical unit and also wire it so the pump pumps when the wiper switch is depressed (I found a good wiring thread on this here on the board). The pump will be underhood.

OK...so what is the good pump motor to put in? Just one of those generic ones from Checkers/AutoZone/Pepboys?

And has anyone found a great solution to a reservoir? I like where the stock one is but it is awful small..would love a one gallon reservoir.

Cheers,

Tim

Re: Windshield Washer Pump and Reservoir

I used http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/P...tt=washer+pump from JC Whitney for $11.99. Hooked it up to the stock wiring so it works when the button is depressed like you want to do. Mounting location wise, just make sure it is close to the reservoir and at or below the fluid level because these electric pumps are weak and won't function otherwise. The stream is acceptably strong; I'm satsified.

Get one of these from a Mitusbishi or Dodge import. Knock the mount off with a chisel or screwdriver. Works great.

Re: Windshield Washer Pump and Reservoir

OK...got the goods.

Which wire do I run to the underhood to power my washer pump, so that when I depress the switch it squirts?

I looked at the wiring diagrams and it looks like the LBL or DBL...not sure which. I know I read this somewhere but my search (wrong word combo mostly) did not prodiuce what I read.

Looks like the 18Y wire is the power feed from the fuse box.

Or is not that easyt to simply extend a wire forward?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Windshield Washer Pump and Reservoir

Alright...if it weren't so wierd it would be funny.

I have used my wipers a few times in the last few months...and the pump never worked.

I get in the beast this morning...and I turn on the wipers and the pump is going all by itself and won't stop. I dpress the switch a few times, switch it form lo to high...turn it off...turn it on again....squirting would not stop. I stop at the grovery store...some back out of the store...get in and it was not pumping...and no amount of depressing the switch would get it to pump again.

Re: Windshield Washer Pump and Reservoir

If I recall there is a blue and a yellow wire. I pulled the connector off the pump and used a spade connector on the new wires.

Re: Windshield Washer Pump and Reservoir

Tim,

The yellow and blue wire get connected to the washer pump. You will have to extend the wires. I used a vacuum tee on the fluid line. PM me if you need some more pictures.

As far as using a Yugo pump, who cares. It works better than the stock unit.
