More Axle #s Question

I pulled the number off my axle tube and got thise

THA W137

According to my charts 69 only used 2 letter axle codes (HA for 69 I show 3.73) and 70 on used 3 letters (71 shows THA for 3.07). Mine are 6 lug axles and I haven't measured it yet to see if it is a narrow axle or the 70 & later axles. Did they have the extra letter on the earlier axles? Since so many other parts from the 69 came from a 71 I am not sure if they swapped rear ends and stuck in 70 6 lug axles on it.

Also, does anyone know what the W137 part of the number means. I don't have any reference for that portion of the number.

Thanks

Re: Mpre Axle #s Question

Where did you find the axle code chart?? Are the housings shorter or are the axle shafts shorter? I have an axle from a 70 and one from a 72 and the housings measure the same.

I use this for a lot of my decoding
http://www.americanclassic.com/paint_test.asp

In early 70 the rear end tubes and axles were made wider by about 3/4 inch. Your 70 (as long as it is a late year run) and the 72 should interchange fine
