327 Crankshaft Damper - Bolt?
Help! Have a 67 Fleetside with 327 - it threw off the lower pulley, broke the belts, took out the radiator, ruined the harmonic damper on the end of the crankshare.
Have replacement parts, but can't tell if the Damper was a simple press on, or if there is supposed to be a crankshaft damper bolt going into the end of the crankshaft. Either there is no bolt for this engine, or the bolt was sheared off as well, I can't put a 7/16" fine thread into the end of the crankshaft. Please... Help! Any suggestions? I'll post pic's of "The General" soon.... 67, Fleetside, Hugger Orange, 2wd, 327, glide. Cheers! |

Here's a quick pic of "the General" named by my daughter..
Future plans are for a 2"-4" set of drop springs and a new tranny and motor. |

Ive even seen early 350's that werent drilled and tapped for the bolt. Sometimes 327's were and sometimes they werent. Most times not in the case of 283's and 327's. You can drill and tap for a bolt if it isnt already. Kind of a pain to do while its in the truck but its not that bad.

Wow that was quick - posted less than 10 minutes ago!
The motor has 100,000+ miles on it, just want it to last till spring when a new 383 is going in with a turbo 400. Thanks for the info, I'm going to press one on and cross my fingers. Thanx! |

Yeah, my 327 doesn't have a bolt either. Make it a real PITA to get the balancer back on.

Yeah - That brings me to my next question - how do you get the new balancer on without any way of tightening it down? Don't like the idea of banging on it...
I guess you could heat it up first, but wouldn't that be hard on the seal in the timing cover? |

BFH's do much harm to thrust bearings and harmonic balancer rubber rings. Sometimes theres no harm. Sometimes theres enough harm to take 20,000 or more miles off an engine, Sometimes the engine makes it to the end of the street before the balancer disintegrates. Seen it happen.

yea theres probably a better way....the dampner on my 283 was different than a normal dampner...more like solid steel..and your supposed to "set" the thrust bearings anyways...maybe beating it with a BFH isnt the best way though...lol

I used the BFH method also.
What is the proper way to install a press fit harmonic balancer? I don't think you want to take it to a machine shop every time you change a camshaft or whatever (when you have the balancer off) |
