Casting number - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Could someone decode this for me? Engine is
a Chevy 327.
These are the numbers I found on the block (front right/below head:
19B377698
also found this stamped next to it:
T0416H0

Tried to do a search on net, but could not find
any reference....

Here's what I got for HO:

1965 HO 327ci Powerglide 300hp 4bbl Vette
1969 HO 350ci 300hp 4bbl B

Get the casting number from the block. It's on the back of the block where it bolts to the tranny, on the driver's side. That # should tell you which of the two it is (hopefully)

Hmmm, I show the 327 Vette application for HO as being '65 through '68, not just '65.

But, 19B377698 shows it to be a '69 motor. Are you sure it's not a 350?

thanks guys. as far as i know/the previous owner knew, it's a 327. guess i'm taking his word for it. how could i be sure it is a 327? have'nt had the truck for long, so don't really know for sure. previous owner did'nt know much about mechanics to be dangerous, so he probably did'nt even know the right size, since he had purchased the pickup with the engine already installed (3 years a go)....
you think it could be a 350... Blazer1970?

If you can see the block casting number, that would likely tell if it is a 327 or a 350. The casting number is on a surface just above the bell housing on the back of the block on the drivers side, facing up. The casting number is cast into the block, not stamped like the block ID # on the front.

Actually, the rear casting number probably won't do us any good. Some 350's, 327's, and 302's had the same casting numbers. Someone will be able to help....TTT

The engine size on my truck came up this
weekend again, after trying to set the
timing, tuning, etc..
My friend has a reference book to set the
timing on certain engine sizes, and he
said he thought I had a 350, not a 327 by
looking at the casting numbers.

Any way, I sent an email to mortec.com, and
they responded with this....

Hi,

The motor was assembled at the Tonawanda plant (T) on April 16th (0416). The "HO" suffix code was used on 1969 model 350/300hp motors originally installed in an Impala with a four speed and a Rochester four barrel carb. The second digit of the engine VIN you sent is a "9" confirming the model year.

So I guess I have a 350 not a 327 like the previous owner stated. Eithier way, it's a great
engine....

Someone posted on an earlier thread that there were differences in the engines as to where the oil fill was, some were on the front of the engine and othrs on the valve cover also someone posted that there were differences as to which side the dipstick was on.
I am sure you could post a pic of your engine maybe even research the rear number or even pull the valve covers to check the casting numbers on the heads.

283 & 327 had oil fill tube on intake like the 327 in this picture.
Passenger side dipstick vrs drivers side is a much later year differance. I thik they went to passenger side in the 80's, but I am not sure when though.

The 307 could have an oil filler tube up front also.

this could be true about the filler, if i
had the original setup. the engine now has
an aftermarket intake, etc. I'm sure motec
is correct as far as the casting number goes.
The reason I couldn't find it the first time
i visited the site, was they do not list all "suffix codes", because there are thousands of
them, from '55-2003. he said it's easier to
answer an email from people, than to have to
list all the codes. eithier way, here's a pic
of the engine......

One way to tell if it's pre 68 is at the rear of the block beside the distributor on the drivers side there will be a road draft tube , it's the crank case vent . It may have been pluged with a freeze plug but if it's there it's definitly pre 68 block. also, You can call the GM dealer and give them the # and
thay can tell you what it is.
