Finishing Power Brake Conversion
I put a booster, brackets, and linkage on a '71 for a local guy. I noticed the linkage going to the pedal was quite a bit shorter...didn't seem right though because I had to adjust the brake light switch all the way down to work. Also, the pedal doesn't touch the rubber bumper any more. Is this how it is supposed to be or is there a different bumper/switch/pedal or something?
Also, what is supposed to cover the hole in the firewall where the linkage goes through? Thanks, Derek |

Mine touches the rubber bumper, but I'm about 5 full turns from falling off (only on about 1/2"). I can't seem to adjust my light switch though because the whole thing just spins and my light stays on. I will try again this weekend.
As for the hole, it should be a grommet of sorts, I don't have one either. |

I installed a setup from a 79 and had the same linkage problem. What year booster, m.c., etc. did you use? I had to extend the length of the linkage by using a piece of threaded rod and a coupler. The current rod length is shorter than stock, which is why the pedal doesn't rest on the the bumper anymore. Do you still have full pedal travel? If not then you'll need to change the rod length. As for the hole in the firewall, I'm not sure what they did for the 67-72's, but my 79 has a plastic cylindrical piece that covers the linkage assembly. Hope this helps.

Forget all of the discussion of '79 systems and any other different styles, it will just confuse you.
Everything you said is correct. The pedal on PB does not come up to the rubber pad. Go look at an original 67-72 like yours and check some basic measurements. If you do any cutting, welding, drilling, etc you will just make it worse. |

I'm not 100% sure what year the master cylinder/booster/brackets/linkage are off of. The owner of the truck got the parts out of a junked truck and he didn't look. He did get a new booster and master cylinder from the parts store but he just had them match the parts up and he didn't ask the year.
What are you supposed to use as a measurement to adjust the linkage to? If the pedal won't touch the rubber bumper no matter how much you screw the linkage out then what do you use as a reference? The brakes seem to work fine although we haven't had it on the road yet. I just don't want the linkage to be too long and damage the booster somehow. Thanks again, Derek |

It sounds from your description that it's mounted correctly. As Frank states, the pedal doesn't touch the rubber bumper with pb's. Go look at any other Chev with pb's of this era- they all do it. Also, you don't have to worry about the rod going through anything- it's just shorter. Again, it sounds like it's correctly hooked up. Drive it and you'll be able to tell very quickly one way or another, then let us know.

I am 6'2 and really like the fact that the pedal is further away
all you have to do is make sure that the brake can be fully depressed and the brake light works |
