i broke my shifter
ok, i got column shift 3 speed. it's been stiff to pull back in the 1 - R gate. i figured it just needed some lubing. not that big a deal.. nope.. something snapped inside my steering column. now the question is how do i fix this?
not sure if this is the right forum for this to be posted in.. so i just put it here. if a mod needs to move it.. go right ahead. and thanks.

Re: i broke my shifter
Maybe the tip end of the lever broke off, pull the pin and slide the lever out

Re: i broke my shifter
You broke the end of your shift lever off in column--see photo
http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_049.html Remove lever pin (drive from bottom up)-pull lever out-reach in with needle nose pliers and remove broken piece. Spray WD-40 or oil in the slot where lever was removed. Install new or used lever. Under hood spray WD-40 in the place where the shift levers come out of column. It will not feel like you have a power assisted shift lever. (above advice carrys no warrenty)

Re: i broke my shifter
I just got flash backs of when I was 16 and would have to get out of my '62 with a pry bar to unstick the gear shift with cars honking at me. I fixed it by putting in a 4 spd.

Re: i broke my shifter
yeah but if the shifter is not broke the tube in the column itself could be, 3 spd trucks are fun to drive once you get the trick of shifting it right so it doesn't hang up, some are worse than others especially when all the bushings and linkage gets wore out, instead of putting mine in the floor i'm just gonna redo the column shift with new bushings and such

Re: i broke my shifter
The cause is usually worn bushings where the levers are under the hood. They aren't kept lubed and wear. You can dismantle the column and replace them with bushings from the hardware store. I had one that would hang in first and required pulling the levers back into neutral. I let some other sucker live with it.

Re: i broke my shifter
Not to Hijack, but my old 70 stepper I had was converted to floor shift because
the housing snapped on the column and broke the entire mounting point, this was before I owned it, so they put in a Indy floor shifter, you know the cheap ass floor shifters from AZ, one night my truck driver buddies layed over at the plant and deceided to run down to the truck stop for some grub, I had since purchased another truck and had this one sitting at the plant, well off they go and as they went down the exit ramp to merge into traffic on the interstate it snapped off in their hands Imagine a slammed 70 stepper, heated coils by the way, with a inline 6, and 4:10 gears stuck in 1st on the interstate it took them almost an hour to get back to the plant, normally 10 mintues, and they spent another hour welding the shifter back together so it would work

Re: i broke my shifter
It would probably be cheaper to buy a GOOD used one here on the board.

Re: i broke my shifter
so it could be the end of the shifter that broke off? just drive the pin out and pull the handle out? ok, anything going to happen when i pull that thing out? simple remove and replace operation? i've never really dealt with steering columns.
thanks for the offer truword.. PM sent. though i think i'm gonna let it sit till after the first of the year. i got a few other things i need to sort out with it. namely brakes and suspension bushings. i might even go as far as putting PS in it. this is my daily driver after all. my good friend suggested i just pull out my 3speed and put a th350 that i have laying around in it. and thanks for all the replys the more i know the better off i think i'll be.
