Hello, I'm a newbie! Can I get some help?
Hey Ya'll,
I just bought a sweet '68 Shorty and I'm trying to find out exactly what kind of engine I have in it. I'm the 4th owner and the guy I bought it from said it is a crate 350, but I'm not so sure. I know that most '68's with V8's were 327's, correct? The stamping on the engine right below the pass. side head is 2M0529. Does anyone know where I can find out what this stamp # means? Thanks for your help and I will post picks of "Jenny" soon! Thanks, Jeff |

Sounds like a Crate motor number to me. Are you sure that is ALL the numbers on the front pad??? - Can you see the casting numbers on the back of the block - drivers side where the tranny bolts to the block.
Most "factory motors" of our trucks would have a code on the front ending with 2 or 3 letters i.e. ("ce" or "DTM") or something like that. Do you have a picture of the motor? - might be able to tell just by looking @ it - unless alot of "bling" has been put on it.

Re: Hello, I'm a newbie! Can I get some help?
Hey thanks for the hospitality!!!!! I have not checked the numbers on the back of the block, but I will try to find em tomorrow. The engine looks VERY stock, no bling or frills (just the way I like it!. I MAY add a set of ceramic headers, but she already sounds like a beast, so...
Thanks again for the help, I'm sure I will be back with many more questions for the "Experts!" |

Get the # off the back of the block. Go to Mortec .com. That site will tell you the block size

Re: Hello, I'm a newbie! Can I get some help?
Look at the back passenger side rear of the motor for your casting numbers and the drivers side for your date code which will read like A 17 69
A = January 17= the day of month the last 2 or 4 will = the year the engine was made. I used a digital camera stuck up against the fire wall and alot of luck to shoot the pictures of my numbers. After you get the numbers and date could you can goto moretec.com and find alot of the crossover information for the numbers. Good luck and welcome aboard. Not all the V8's in the '68's were 327's. I think some were 307's right??
I'm sure someone here will have a definite answer for you. Besides that, hello from Texas, Round Rock that is..... |
