Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
I'm ready to buy a compressor and I'm torn. I've had my eye on a Ingersoll Rand 60 gal., 5hp, single stage compressor. It's scfm is rated at 18.1 for $799.99 or I found a Kobalt at Lowe's (60 gal, 7hp, single stage) that produces 13.3 scfm for a touch over $500. Obviously, the Ingersoll Rand is a better compressor but would it really be worth the extra money? I plan on using for everything (sanding, painting, etc). Any input would be awesome.

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
If you are using air tools, especially DA sander 18.1 is way better than 13.3
Mine is rated at 13 and I spend 1/2 the time waiting to build up or letting it cool off in hot weather.

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
So, what would this model be useful for? Could you paint with it, and wrench with it? What kind of torque does 150 psi translate to?

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
It's all about how long it can maintain 150 PSI.10 seconds,or 5 minutes,or allday,of course the longer it can work the more money it will cost.A tools working pressure is usually 90PSI,sprayguns 30-45,generally.Things like sanders, blasters, air hammers all take a lot of air, impacts and wrenches next in line.
So what do you want it to do? I have a 7hp,two stage 80gal IR,and it is a decent compressor.Have no problems with impacts, air ratchets ect on a normal day.DA's and airfiles on the otherhand I Have to stop every 10 minutes or so and let it breathe a little. But for what I do,it works fine. Get the most compressor you can scrape together, you will not be sorry. And get one with the seperate pump/motor,the one piece units are a POS IMO.

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
I ordered my compressor today. I went with the Ingersoll Rand. More jing but I think I'll be much happier. Once again, thanks for the input.

I'm exactly like Brainchild. I have an 80 gallon 2 stage unit. It's plenty for everything but air sanders. They require an occasional catch up period.

Do you think I'll eventually end up regretting not going bigger than this one?

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
Check the link below. There is some pretty good compressor info in the second paragraph.
http://www.eatoncompressor.com/catal...747/206949.htm BTW.....this is the compressor that I bought. It's quiet and pumps up quickly.....works great!

I was thinking of getting the same compressor (the IR). I LIke this one for the 18.1 cfm and the price as im on a very tight budget. Like you i will be useing this for everything, impact, paint gun, sanding, rachet, etc. How do you like it? I would also like to get some feedback from others two. I also like the one in post 14 but im afraid i cant afford that on my strict budget. thanks

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
I have seen people who had a small compressor compensate(is that a dirty word?) by plumbing in an extra tank. The pump doesn't pump more but there is a larger volume of air to use before you have to let it catch up.Of course it takes longer to catch up.Kind of a band-aid rather than a solution.

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
Hmmm ive been researching this on hotrodders BB and a few people are saying that the 18.1 is bogus and that it is an inflated number by useing tank assisted and have evedence backing up the theroy.

Re: Need some compressor recommendations---Help!
I read the article posted on the above thread and laughed. Seems like those guys know nothing about compressors. Go with a 2 stage compressor a single stage will run hot and at warp speed trying to keep up. And as far as the cold goes it has nothing to do with the motor but merely the crankcase being cold and they sell heaters that plug into the oil plug hole for cheap. There is thread about this in the paint section of the forums. I work for the Quincy compressor distributor here in AZ so I know a little about compressors because I do it five days a week.
