factory 4speed

Does any one know if the 67-72 2wd trucks came from the factory with a 4 speed trans? If they did, what trans was it? I would like to put a 4 speed in my truck, but want to stick with parts that would have come on it. Thanks for any info.

Just so you know, these atre the compound low "Truck" transmissions. Not like the Vette 4-speeds.

What company makes 420 465, muncie? I looked around on the website and people here have installed saginaw and muncie(m20,21 22) four speeds without many problems.

the 465 and 420 are serious grunt runners. i have been told that gm used the 465 in trucks up to their 2.5 ton dumpers. i have two of these, both in my blazers and i like them alot.

If you want to stick with parts that were available on these trucks, you'll want to use the SM-420 for 67s and the 465 for 68-72. These were the standard 4 speeds installed in trucks. Both were made by GM. There was also an option of a close-ratio four speed for use on 2WD trucks, it was a New Process 435.

I had a 465 in one of my 4X4's and it is a mule of a trans. I am putting a M21 in my two wheel drive with out any problems. My dad put a Saginaw in his '67 with no problems.

Re-read the above quoted post. There is no mention of 2WD or 4WD.

After some research, I dont know if I would want to use any of these trannys. 1st gear on the 420 (7.05), 465 (6.54), 435 (4.78). With a 3.73 rear i wont be going anywhere. 2nd gear is still lower than 1st on my 3spd. Maybe a muncie or saginaw would be worth the trouble of rigging stuff up to make it work.

If you're looking for a Hot Rod 4 speed you want to go with something besides the factory trans.You will need a floor shifter.The ones listed as original equipment are the "Farmer 4 Speed with granny gear."

I want everything to work properly, I hate it when stuff is rigged up and never seems to work right. I thought that i could bolt in a 4sp that came on the pickup with out running into a bunch of issues.

I am worried about how the shift linkige will work, and how the shifter will come through the floor with the saginaw or m22. If I find a cheap one I might give it a shot.

i run a 4 speed saginaw in my '69 with a mild 305. a saginaw will last as long are easy when u shift the gears, if you like to really slam gears, buy a muncie. i've blown 2 saginaws up in from slammin gears to hard. hurst makes a shifter to put the car type 4 speeds saginaws and mucie in the truck. jegs a summit sell them. assumin you have a 3 speed tranny know, the 4 speed saginaw will bold up with any modifacions to the driveshaft. if think the muncies will too but have never tried it. chris.

There is no rigging when putting a Muncie or Saginaw in one of these trucks. It fits in just like in a car and comes up through the floor in the correct spot. Both my truck with the Muncie and my dads truck with the Saginaw have bucket seats with consoles and have no issues what so ever. We are using the Hurst competition Plus shifters with the standard handles that come with it and it clears everything. I am sorry I can't get any pics for you because I am in Austria and both trucks are in Virginia. I came across this sight on ebay. They have everything for a Muncie Trans: riversidegear.com I am going to get the Overdrive setup for the M21. That will make my 500 + h.p. bigblock drivable on longdistance trips.

I have a muncie car 4 speed that I used in a Jeep for years and I was constantly adjusting the Hurst linkage and changing linkage bushings. If all you are looking for is a period correct 4 speed that is hastle free with no external linkage that would bolt right in, I would go with the SM 420 465 "Truck" 4 speeds. The key word here is Truck or Car . Never mind that 1st gear low ration. You only use it to creep when you have to. Otherwise you have a 3 speed, using 2-3 and 4.
Unless you realy want to drive like a sports car, I would just use the truck 4 speed.
Your choice though.

Not that I am an expert, but I am in the process of converting to an NV3500 ... a lot more to it than I thought, but ...

Some have mentioned installing Muncies or Sagniaws ... were their "top loader" versions of these trannys? My truck had a 420/465 and it was with the shifter coming right out of the top of the unit. My '68 Firebird has an M21 and the shifting mechanism is slung to the side, and would not come through the same point in the tranny hump. It would be closer to the driver's side.

My NV3500 came through about 6-8" further back on the tranny hump. Shifting was not impared by the seat.

If your going to go through all the work to put a 4 in that truck, I'd just step up in the dollar department and put an NV4500 in it.

We got a acouple SM465s in trucks around here, and IMO, the ratios stink.......I love the low hole, and use it alot, but everything between 1st and 4th is wrong. NV4500 is alot better when you look at the numbers. My problem, especially when towing with our trucks............4th is too steep a gear, 3rd ain't steep enough.

This is the way I went with my 70 396: Muncie M20 and just like Bishops Trucks said, everything cleared perfect and no driveshaft changes. Truck was originally a 3spd. Here's a pic:

I have a 1967 2wd shortbed with a factory 4 speed and 283 motor. I don't know the rearend ratio but I don't even use first gear. I live in Pittsburgh that has many steep hills. I start off in 2nd gear and can go up any hill. I can only do about 55-60 mph anything faster kills my gas mileage. I don't have a tach so I don't know the rpm's at those speeds.
