Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
Nose is '69-'70
I think the front axle from the newer trucks will fit - there rears need the spring perches moved *I think* I'm not positive - hopefully someone else will know for sure

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
Yes on the swap, D44's will bolt right in. I have a 75 axle under my 67 and a 72 steering box. Before the swap I placed the 72 and a 76 PS steering box side by side, there was no difference. From the grill it looks like a 69. Take the vin number and go to GMC pauls' website, he is a vendor here. Maybe you can de-code the build date. Here is the link:

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
Clip appears to be off a 69.The axle should work but keep in mind these trucks came stock with lockouts and a newer axle might not but if it doesnt have a transfer case you dont have to worry much about that because you can just use the one that was in the truck the front axle came from.It can be a 68 title but actually a 69 model year too.Nice score, where are all the 4x4s hid in Indiana?I could only find one

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
nice find...I am getting ready to put a 75 Dana 44 under my 68 K-10. looks like everything will fit and I only paid $125 on Ebay. Complete (rotors, lockouts, 3.07 gears, steering stabilizers, etc..) except for the calipers. I will have a 68 closed knuckle Dana 44 if you are wanting to go back to original for your 69. I will be travelling back to Indy in the spring too...

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
This is correct. I just put 1976 axles on my 72. I had to cut off and reweld the rear spring perches inboard. front axle went right in.

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
yes, rear axle spring perches will have to be rewelded. The older '67-'72 frames, or at least the springs were skinnier than the '73 and newer. I ran into this when I put and Eaton rear in my '79 Suburban and had to widen them.

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
the fronts will bolt right in you will need a rear from a 1ton or you will have to move the spring mounts. Im going to do the same thing on mine so I can have disk breaks. That is if I can find a 3/4 ton front around here some ware.

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
As far as 4x4's go I just bought my 8th one last week. I now have a 1 67 1/2 ton, 1 68 3/4 ton, 1 69 3/4 ton, 1 70 GMC 3/4 ton, 1 71 1/2 ton 2 72 K5's, 1 71 3/4 ton 4 of which run and drive nice. Needless to say, I am trying to corner the market on them in Indiana

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
I am pretty sure one of the shock mounts has to be changed also. My 86 the shocks are staggerd and on my Blazer they are both on the same side of the axle. I you end up putting in a 14 bolt rear, get one from a 1 ton, they bolt in without having to change the perches.

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
Thanks for all the info, I have a mid 70's Blazer parts Truck with Axles, Tanny, Transfercase that will end up in here as time permits. This is a back burner project for now.
Want to concentrate on My 67 Stepside & the 72 Wrecker 1st, I found another 68 Doghouse at the Junkyard today. Im very partial to the 67-68 Front's so all mine will have this look. Here are a few more Pics of this one as it was found, As u can see it's gonna need some work to get back on the Road........ Thanks, Rick |

He reminded me that he had pointed out the bumper laying close to Truck & asked me if i wanted it since it had been on that Truck, I Didn't pay much attention to it as it was so Ugly............ Again that was a good catch on that as i hadn't noticed it originally, Guess i will wait till i get it home to decide if i truly want to rebuild this now, Scheduled to go pick up the Wrecker on Thursday & will go pick 4x4 after that............. Thanks, Rick Btw, Where are u located in Indiana??? |

Re: 73-87 Axle fit 67-72???
I am located near Vincennes in Knox county.Welding on new frame horns are easy.I need to do the same on my 69 K10.I cut the front of the frame off a 69 C/10 to use.Usually there is a set of them on here or ebay for sale around $20.If you need pics of what they should look like stock I will get you a pic.
I would keep the 4x4 whether you need it now or not, there is not many in Indiana and I keep any I find in the yard till I am ready to rebuild them. Last edited by 1969k10stepside; 12-22-2006 at 11:12 PM. |
