Here's a quick one:

What is the danger of putting too much oil in a crankcase - say and extra 1/2 to 3/4 of a litre/quart?

Or is there any danger?

I dont know, but am interested to find out too.

Whats the problem do you have an oil leak and want to take a long trip without having to stop and add oil?

No danger. If you do put too much the crank will actually spin in oil. That's not good. If you replace the filter you can easily remove up about 3/4 of a quart.

Wow Quick responce (starting to feel like CT).

I was asking because last night I changed oil and filter on our 3.0L Nissan Pathfinder. I forgot about the capacity and proceeded to put the entire 4 Litre/guart jug in (about half a litre more than required). The dipstick now shows about 1/2" above full.

I guess I'm just lazy. I just though if it's no biggy, I wouldn't need to get back under there and drain out the new oil. But we're actually heading on a 20 hour road trip this weekend, so I might just take a little out to be safe.

Yeah its not that big of a deal, unless its in huge amounts you should have a problem.

if you have too much the crankshaft can actually spin and stir the oil, causing to to bubble and lose its viscosity. i dont know how big of a problem this is though... i would rather have too much oil than not enough

i dont think would be any problem anyways, the only time the crank would really be spinning in the oil would be during cranking times, alot of oil would be up in the top end and other places enough to keep the oil level down under crank itself. they make windage trays for this

Thanks for all the opinions guys. I got home from work today and actually removed about 1/2 litre of the oil. The dipstick still reads full, so I think I should be OK.
