Where to get a rebuilt 350

Hello. My 70 Chevy longhorn truck broke down yesterday on the freeway. It had a strong 350 engine (maybe original), but i never replaced the thermostat and it overheated. I blew the head gaskets on it, and now im looking for a place to find another 350 remanufacutered one. Its pepboys a good source to get one, or any other places? Thanks!!!!!!!!

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

I know around here there is a Chevy dealer that sells the GM Goodwrench crate 71-84 350 for $1300. 4 bolt main with 3 year 100k warrenty. Not sure what your budget calls for, but they are about as solid an engine as you can get.

Other than that there is a guy in Sandy, OR that does 350's for $900 and covers it for life. I had a friend get one from him 10 years ago. He pulled it last year when we were doing some other stuff (nothing was wrong with it), took it back and the guy went through the whole thing for free. Not bad for a 5 day turn around.

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

if its just the head gaskets and you are sure of that, pull the heads off....have them re surfaced and get a new set of gaskets.....as long as you did not drive the truck into the ground it will be fine.

I have seen 350s survive alot worse than a blown head gasket.

On the other hand now is the best time to rebuild, replace or upgrade if that is a consideration.

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

Got mine shipped from Jasper Engines. www.jasper.com

I am very pleased...tossed in an HEI dizzy, 8.5mm wires...doubled mileage.

Don't buy their water pump/gasket/belt package. Not worth it in my estimation.

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

personally, after the luck we've had at the shop, i wouldn't recomend a GM goodwrench motor, nor jasper. Too many have been duds.
I agree that if it was just blowing a head gasket, I'd just resurface/replace the heads, and put it together.

i would trust a pep boys or even auto zone engine before the previouse ones mentioned.

When I worked at a chevy dealership, we used Jasper engines, warranty was hard to beat, 3 yrs and 75k miles. Had no problems with them and you can get them built like you want.

That's what I say about the Russ Chevy deal. 3 years 100k, how bad can it be? Yes, a dud would be a pain, but you have 100k to find out. I have a few friends that have gone that route and have not had issues.

Oregon Engine Rebuilders also used to offer engines on ebay, but I think they do mostly Toyota engines online now. OER has a lifetime warranty for anything other than a race application. Every motor he has built has been bomb proof. Guess you could call and see if they would do a Chevy for you. I think it was $900 for a standard rebuild.

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

personally if i was going to buy a motor,,i would go through the dealer,,nation wide warrenty..cant beat it if your along side of the road in the middle of nowhere and blow up...nice to call them and they take it in..but then this happened on a towncar,,and they installed it to..

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

I decided to replace the whole engine. its just too shaky when i start it and i think its easier too just take that one out and the new one in. Im gonna spend almost the same thing on resurfacing that one than a rebuilt one. Well thanks again for your opinions and happy new year!!!!!!!

I'm surprised that you've had problems with Jasper. 6.5L Diesel? - probably part of the problem to begin with.
I've never heard of a problem with them. They have a 75K warranty and will even warranty the labor if installed by a Jasper Dealer.

Re: Where to get a rebuilt 350

for what it's worth, i checked my advance auto parts, and they had a stock 350 long block setup with 4 bolt main for about $940. that was cheaper than the 2 bolt by about $30
