Can anyone tell me? Will the stock tach in my 71 GMC work with a HEI Distributor? I saw somewhere in a catalog for factory replacement tachs that said "will not work with HEI"? Thanks

I'd be interested to know that too. I just picked up a complete tach instrument cluster with a bunch of parts I bought a week or so ago & would like to put it in my '67/454/HEI rig.

should work like any after market tack, tach wire to the neg side of the hei snout. if you lock close it will say batt+ on the right for the hot wire and tach on the left for the signal wire.

I have a factory tach with HEI, no problems or any extra parts needed.

I'VE PUT AT LEAST A DOZEN FACTORY TACHs IN TRUCKS EQUIPTED WITH HEI.s WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. JOHN

no problem with mine, original factory tach and Mallorey HEI distributor. I just put on a female connector and plugged it in....

Its just a way for the gauge companies to sell you a $100 adaptor that amounts to a wire with an HEI wire end. It will work fine, just hook it up...

For what it's worth, I just picked up a NOS Sun tach from the late 50s and early 60s that originaly worked with a sending unit, like a magnetic switch that would open close kinda each rev of the engine off of firing intervals from the coil.
I had it rebuilt to work as a modern instrument without the sending unit and to withstand the MSD voltage. The big thing to watch out for is the higher voltage that the tech told me could fry the old school stuff. The older stuff was a lot more forgiving voltage wise than the newer high volt ignitions.
