Why would you want to try??? There's plenty of originals around for sale right here on the board that will slip right in without any mods........

70's van tilts will be the cheapest way to go... they look identical to the truck units and require very little modification..... lots of people here who have done this swap who can help once you find one.... check the parts board, too...

Watch the parts board, you should be ble to pick one up cheap, or maybe make a trade with someone. Aethey's has them completely rebuilt for 250.00 + shipping. Most people want that for a used one. Good luck!

Use the search function on this board, you will come across the website on how to swap to a van tilt.

Thanks 1971LT1SWBPOSI373,
But I can't seem to find the resource page you referred to. Tried to do a search
but the only hit I got was this thread. I'd like to order a tilt column, can you give
me a little clarification?
Thanks

Galoolie, go here... Shanandoah Truck Parts is on the left side. You might want to bookmark this site if you're not aware of it. Best of luck!!!!!!! TJ

I just took a look, and the columns are $375.00 there rebuilt. I must have seen it in one of the other suppliers. Take a look. If I'm mistaken I'm sorry.... I swear it was 250.00 though.

nu2, the weblink shows only auto column installation, but I can't really see a big difference if you can find a manual tilt from a van.

I don't know much about vans but I don't think any could come with a floor shifter. Wouldn't they all be shifter on the column? The engine sits right in between the seats so there would be no room for a shifter. (or am I wrong?)

I would also think that finding an early 70's van with a tilt column would be an enormous task!

If you don't mind some minor mods, check out some Caddy's and Pontiacs in the junkyards. My truck has a tilt/telescopic steering column that came either from a Caddy or a Pontiac. It was in the truck when I bought it so I can't give exact details on the install but from what I can see, the only mod was to trim out the plastic on the speedometer bezel a tad. I see no signs of any other mods.

I'd take a tape measure to the junk yard and start the search if I were you!

I can't say for a Chevy, but we used to have a '78 Ford van when I was a kid, and it had a stick (it was even overdrive!). It's what I learned to drive in.
