wireing question???

I have a 69 C10 with a 350 engine that I am restoring. The body is still off as well as the wiring harness.
I want to start the engine but am comfused about the wiring.
I used my ignition switch and put one wire from the terminal on the switch that says bat. and ran it to one side of the starter. I ran another from the ign. terminal on the switch to the other side of the starter. Then I ran one from the distributor (HEI) to the other bat terminal on the switch.............nothing happens.......can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Re: wireing question???

The terminal marked battery should be hooked up to a constant 12v source. Ignition terminal should be hooked up to the HEI. and there should be a dedicated starter terminal on the ignition switch which should be connected to the actual starter {relay, solenoid}.

Re: wireing question???

ok.........there is a sol on the switch I think. On the starter the battery cable is connected in the middle on the large bolt. There is a small bolt on the starter (solenoid) on either side of the battery cable. Should one wire run to the Bat terminal on the switch and the other to the Sol on the switch?

Re: wireing question???

let me see if I have it.........
take one wire from the switch "ign" to the HEI
take one wire from the switch "bat" to the positive cable on the solinoid on the starter
take one wire from the switch "sol" to a ground on the frame.
Does that sound correct?

No..... Do not run wire from SOL to ground.

Positive cable from the Battery goes to big post on the solenoid.
Negative cable from the battery goes to any bolt on the engine block.
Run 12 gauge wire from positive post on battery to "BAT" terminal on ignition switch.
Run 14 gauge wire from + side of coil to "IGN" terminal on ignition switch.
Run 14 gauge wire from small bolt marked "S" on solenoid to "SOL" terminal on Ignition switch.

If you want to turn it over but don't want to start it do not hook up the 14 gauge wire from the + side of coil to "IGN" terminal on ignition switch.

This is from memory so it is at your own risk….

Re: wireing question???

Here is an easy way--use old screw driver to start by jumping it from battery post to "S" post on solenoid. To kill engine remove wire from dist to battery.
