pulley misalignment

After getting the proper power steering pump & alternator brackets I noticed that my water pump pulley is not quite in line with the harmonic balancer.
I’m using the small WP and a large harmonic balancer (I think) (its 1 3/4 thick and approximately 7 or 8 in dia.).

The clearance on the water pump and pulley seems close. So I think I have the wrong pulley as I seem to remember seeing a picture where the inner pulley being used for the power steering, and the outer used for the ALT.
If I do need a new pulley for the WP what years & models will work?
Thanks,
Dean

Re: pulley misalignment

Can you take some pics a little farther back that will show your alt and ps brackets? Hard to tell from that close. Is that the short water pump? If it is the alt and ps should both be on the drivers side.

John, those aren’t the new brackets in the pictures. I have the OEM cast iron brackets that have the alt & ps pump on the driver’s side.
Ether way, the water pump pulley is misaligned with the harmonic balancer.
If you still need pictures I can do it- just don’t laugh. (its really is buttco)

Re: pulley misalignment

Thanks john for the link- just what I needed! Are all the water pump pulleys the same on the SWP?

Re: pulley misalignment

You may have a Corvette pump there. They are a little longer than a regular short pump. I have one on my truck that the guy at Pace Chevrolet sold me, and it lines up about like yours. I think the Corvette pump is still available new through GM Performance Parts, which is why they sold it to me.

Re: pulley misalignment

I’ve been thinking about this, but my pulley is misaligned to the rear of the middle v-groove on the harmonic balancer – by a bunch. I originally thought the in needed to be aligned with the inner most v-groove because it is really close to maching up (and it how it’s currently routed).
So if it was a Corvette WP, then the pulley would be misaligned with the middle v-groove in the opposite direction.
So I think I have a pulley problem only.
