that is my understanding also. I guess there are some 3.73 aftermarket gear sets for 3 series carriers.

i did not know that 3,42 was also a 3 series ratio, thought 3.42-4.88 was 4, interesting,.
3.73 is special, the highest ratio of 4, neato,,. yeah different thickness of gear, are thicker 3.73 ring gear, cheating., longer bolts needed though., can work though and does i guess, dunno anyone who has done it though primer67 has to get different axle, his new 3.40 one wont accept 3,.73 gears, abck to the yard for him, heh, i think he is gonna score a 4.11 posi rear out there! that wilkl work well!
