Can some one help me identify this tranny. I thought it was a muncie but now I don't know. It has a 10 bolt side plate and an emblem that looks like an N and a P together in the casting. Thanks

not a muncie, i would say a new process 4 speed. possibly the overdrive one. they work nice im told. Dev.

I bought this about 10 years ago from a junk yard. They said it came out of a school bus. I had in my truck for years. If there is an overdrive in it I don't know about it. Thanks, I'm going to check on that new process.

PS - it would help to remove the linkage. The easiest way to tell what it is will be to look at the shape of the side plate, count the number of bolts and compare to the PDF link given in that thread: http://go.mrgasket.com/pdf/trans_id.pdf

Looks like a T10, but which one is not clear. You will need to inspect the plate to know for sure.

Pretty sure that is an overdrive unit. It would be the New Process NP 440, or MY6, basicly an A833 Chrysler with overdrive. The front shift linkage is reversed. The OD trannys shift into what would be fourth on a normal tranny (direct) for third gear and then shift into "normal" 3rd position for 4th or overdrive. Easy way to tell is to turn the front shift linkage counter-clockwise to shift it and spin the front shaft. If the rear shaft turns faster than the front it is an overdrive unit. If the rear turns slower than the front it is not an overdrive unit. Hope that helps.

Here's a couple more pics I stole

Other than a few extra bolt holes here and there, and an extra large shift platform/bracket, the exterior looks exactly like an a-833. I don't know if a regular 4 speed was available from New Process for Chevrolet?

Thank you everyone for the info. 69 hafton, I have a bell housing like pic 1. I didn't know they made a housing for hydraulic clutches. I plan on buying a kit that bolts to the housing to change to a hydraulic setup.
green machine, thanks for the info. I was reading an article about the upside down linkage bracket, which mine is like. I'm not sure I fully understand the shift pattern. Are you saying go from 1st to 2nd to 4th and then 3rd.? Thanks

The shift pattern is the same as any four speed. I believe what Green Machine is getting at is internally the 3rd & 4th gears are reversed from a normal four speed on the mainshaft (?). The front shift lever on the side cover is the 3rd & 4th lever and is inverted because of this from a normal 4 speed (like yours is). Second pic is of a normal non-OD a833 from a Chrysler vehicle.
