won't start..........HELP
Well I finally got back on my 69 frame off project after several years. Chassie is ready. I tried to crank it yesterday for the first time. Hooked up a temp. gas tank to the existing line (that goes to the fuel pump) and poured a little gas in the carb................nothing happened.......well a small backfire.
After several tries I pulled the line going from the pump to the carb........no gas. Does that mean I could have installed the pump wrong or something........it's new and should work. Any ideas?????? Last edited by 69 air cab; 01-07-2007 at 10:19 AM. |

Re: won't start..........HELP
if its not pumping at all,,make sure the lines not plugged up to the fuel pump,,then if its not my guess would be the pump could be bad,,had that happen before,,in less than 10 miles new pump went bad,,or you dropped the rod,,done that alot to..once you get fuel to pump,,should get to carb...but check lines first to make sure its not plugged..

Re: won't start..........HELP
if the pickup in the tank isnt immersed in the gas it wont feed the pump// try sucking on the fuel supply line to the pump to see if its picking up gas

Re: won't start..........HELP
And what model engine is this? If you didn't remove that pump mounting plate the rod cannot drop out. Only down until it contacts that mounting plate. Easily pushed back up and held in place with some grease until fuel pump can be inserted into position. Make sure the hose in that temp fuel tank is submerged. You can remove the fuel line at the pump and blow back through it and listen for bubbling in the tank to tell if that hose is below fuel level. We'll have it going 'fore ya know it.

Re: won't start..........HELP
Is this a fresh engine? Definitely don't want to be cranking over a fresh engine any more than you have to - takes the cam lube right off :/
Agreed that it's worth just dropping the pump to ensure everything's installed right and be SURE the feed tube you're using is completely immersed. There isn't a lot to go wrong here Last note - when you go to start the thing, don't pour fuel down the throat of the carb - you want fuel poured into the bowl vents so that the bowls are full. |
