502bb

Was curious, has anyone here done the 502 swap? if so whats your thoughts on it? was it worth it? anything you would have done different? just pondering the idea vs rebuild what I have.

Someone on the board that actually lives in your neighborhood has done it. I can't remember who it was though. He got his from Sallee and had some problems, but I think he got them all worked out.

Re: 502bb

Longhorn Man is running a caddy 500.

I used to have a 1970 Cadillac Deville, with that motor, and it was awesome. I should've pulled the motor when i sold the car

RVFR...I don't remember the thread, but a board member put one into a 'burb build-up. I think 502RJ is an EXCELLENT choice for motor-vation.

Re: 502bb

A 502 is going in my "67 GMC" shorty. I don't expect any problems different from anyother BB. If you want to look "original" be prepared to spend some $$$$ as short waterpump brackets are expensive. My 67 C20 with 454 has the long pump and clearance to the radiator/fan is tight.

Holler if you have specific questions.

Good luck - Bob

Re: 502bb

RVFR,I wouldn't sweat the wiring. From all the descriptions I've read the FI for the "Ram Jet" engines is plug and play. You just need a power wire and the rest is a standard motor swap.I haven't done one but from all the literature I've seen it seems like it would be easier than dialing in an ignition/Carb set-up.Try searching www.scogginsdickeyperformance.com or some other GM performance dealer. You might also try GM performance parts.

Re: 502bb

One thing I've heard about the "plug & play" aspect of the FI is...the motor will run in "open loop", ie: no "talkback" from emissions sensors to the FI (or is that "closed loop" ). This could lead to a richer than ideal stachiometric ratio (air/fuel ratio), neccesating more frequent oil changes and greater greenhouse gas pollution. But, if that was a concern, you'd be driving a Toyota Prius, not a BBC !

Now, that being said, there is another board member (gosh...I'm new here and can't remember everyone's name and links) who installed a 350RJ and even hooked up cat converters and O2 sensors to enable the FI to operate in "closed loop" Better fuel mileage, lower emmisions. I can't remember his name, but I applaud his efforts at updating to 21st century technology.

Still, if I had a 502RJ sitting around, I wouldn't worry myself too much about the "open vs. closed" loop issues.

Re: 502bb

I put the HT502 in my truck. with the OEM water pump and pulleys fit fine. I then put the Serpentine setup on and it is TOO close for stock fan and shroud. The ZZ502 or RJ502 would fit the same. The early RamJet502 was just fuel and power, later Ramjet 502 needs +12v and O2 sensor. You also need the high pressure fuel pump for it.
The OEM wireharness for the BBC works with the HT/ZZ engines.
