no power at all in gear

305 engine, runs fine runs good revs up fine all until you put truck in gear and try to get truck moving from dead stop. ive tried everything including swapping on older model distrioutor thats non computer controlled and same with carb too and swapped on good timing chain set and it still does exact same thing, try to get it going in gear and engine will bog down and truck wont hardly move at all under its own power and will eventually backfire up through carb and makes poofing out exhaust, but doesnt do all this when is not in gear. i know the 2.73 gears in the truck dont help acceleration and all but still it should be able to get going without popping and missing all over the place out the intake and exhaust both,

any ideas ? this is a new problem ive never ran into before on these, intake was swapped form 2bbl to 4bbl in its past maye they just did something wrong when they swapped it, i dunno,. maybe dizzy is 180 off, but if it was i dont think it could run as well as it does out of gear.

thanks for anything

two things come to mind. ONE: 305's came with bad, soft cams. They usually dont make it more then 100,000 miles without a problem. So you could have a flat cam lobe or two or three.

TWO: intake was installed in-correctly and a major vaccum leak is goin on somehwere.

cam is always a possibility, but i would think that idle performance would be affected, i yanked the valvecovers too and checked out motion of each rocker and easch pushrod is spinning correctly and all lifters are sending oil up to rockers and everything, adjustment of each rocker is correct too.
gonna pull plugs out and read them i guess, not sure what else i can do, if i cantr find out anything with plugs then i guess ill go with a stock aluminum intake swap and carb swap and then see..
if that doesnt change anything then im just gonna blow the damn thing up, tired of it,.,.

Fast, Sounds like a Timing issue! find TDC on #1 then check to see where the rotor is...
Also the timing chain could have jumped... whats the vacuum?

If you still have the catalytic conveter on then it may be pluged causing the problem you discribe.

I had the same problem year's ago on a pontiac grand prix the car wouldnt move out of its own way and the cat was the trouble.

Could it have something to do with the torque converter? IE: it's locking up as soon as you put it into gear, and killing the engine? Everything else seems to be in order...just throwing out ideas...
