Re: HEI or Points?

By the way - if you want a tutorial on how to install HEI on a 6cyl or a V8, check out the FAQ/tech writeup part of the forum for a couple of install threads. It's actually pretty easy and man, what a hell of a difference it made on my truck! Instant starts!!

I agree shifty, but I wanted to mention that the OPer can also put in one of those Mallory or Pertronix electronic conversion things that go right in in place of the points and retain his current timing set-up.I have heard that they are improved now and won't get roasted if you leave the ignition on after shut-down.
There is one plus for point system; They seldom suddenly quit like electronic ignition. They usually give you plenty of warning when they are going bad.
Also, some guys tried to steal my last '69 (old point system) one night and couldn't get it started and just said F.I. and moved on.

Re: HEI or Points?

no question about it, unless you want to stay with original equipment, yank that point dist out and install your hei, no points/dwell to have to set. on your point type dist. you have what is call a resistor wire that comes of the "R" side of the starter. you dont need the resistor wire no more, the resistor wire was to lower the current to the points , so as not to fry em. I removed my resistor wire and sent a key hot 12 to the battery side of the coil. nice gift buy the way... thats way cool

Re: HEI or Points?

When you can get a NICE HEI setup from White Performance for $65 and all you have to do is get a set of wires, it's well worth it. If you get the wires from him too, I think he will combine shipping.

I got a nice rebuilt MSD distributor and 8.8mm wires of ebay for $60 and have not had a single issue in over a year.
