Argh!! Fuel leak

Ok, I have not looked at it yet, but from the back of the cab under the car I have a drip that smells like Gas. I have questions, and I am a Oil changer at best so please bear with me.

1. How is it dripping under the car instead of leaking in the cab?

2. Is it leaking in the cab and I dont know it.

3. How hard is this to fix? JB weld or do I need to buy a new tank assembly.

4. Is it worth it to do a under bed conversion ( I have little to no money right now).

thx

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

Could it be that the lines that exit the tank are leaking? It will probably be fairly noticeable once you get a chance to inspect it. The tank conversion seems like it would be a great upgrade, but if funds are limited it may not be an option. I think Blazer tanks will swap between our framerails, but I don't know how much they go for???

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

on my truck the fuel metal fuel line from the tank comes out at the rear center of the cab. it goes into a short piece of rubber hose. check that first. it may not be your tank leaking. pkj

That is where mine let loose. 30+ years of dry rot and abuse and it finally gave out.

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

Yep, thats it, had a look at lunch. I thought the fuel line would have been metal all the way to the tank... live and learn. Do I need to empty the tank or is there a way I am not thinking of to change this, any hints?

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

I am pulling off memory here, but I don't think you need to siphon the tank. I think the fuel line goes up into the corner of the cab above the tank, and then loops back down. It will leak gas when you unhook it, but should only do as much as is in the line up to the upper-most point.
Hopefully someone can back me up on this.

I think you are correct, at least according to my after market parts manual... aka LMC Catalog

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

if the line is full of fuel when you pull the hose off it will act just like siphoning and the gas will come out
when i changed mine i switched it as fast as i could with only a small amount og gas loss

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

Right you are chopper, and that sucked!!

after I got the line off, I realized I had the wrong sized replacement. so I had to let it drain in an oil pan while I went for a 4 gal. washtub (low enough to get under) Then I played move the liquid gold around until it drained. The job was a lot easier then. With Ice coming I just put hte new one on and put the gas back in the truck. I will crank it and check to make sure its done right later.

Thanks everyone for the help, and thanks LMC for showing me what to buy from somewhere else again! lol.

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

O yea, and if someone seaches this post later here is what I would have done different. I would have used a pair of vice grips to clamp the center of the line and give me some time to work. I would have worn my eye protection, i didnt get hurt but it easily could have happened. and make sure you have buckets enough to catch gas if needed, and they fit under the truck.

Re: Argh!! Fuel leak

If you unhook the line where it goes in the sending unit that will break the siphon, and you won't lose any gas.
