6-lugs and disk brakes
On the 69 Chevy CST/10 with the 6 lugs all around, what are some on the cheep disk brake conversions. Ive been searching on here, and looked through the FAQ, but havent found any solid answers.
Im trying to retain the factory 6 lug set up all around, just for the simplicity of rims and such. Also what brake boosters, proportioning valves, etc do you guys use? |

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
6 lug rotors cost way more than 5 lug, and that cost goes on and on every time you replace the roters... plus, you can't just go to auto zone or your parts house of choice and get them. Plus, if you have original 6 lug rims, they won't fit anyways.

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
Trying to keep it 6 all around, simply because right now, getting new rear axles so all are 5 isnt in my budget. And find it a tad silly to run 5 in front, and 6 in rear, and have mix-matched rims right now... The goal is to get it running and safe. And disk brakes are on the list for the front.
Ill read though that link you gave... Edit: those had the info on the disks that I was looking for, thanks. Last edited by texanidiot25; 01-17-2007 at 03:13 AM. |

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
What about finding a 71 or 72 that is almost gone and swapping front suspension and rear ends?
I was able to find a 72 that a guy bought for parts and paid him $100 when he was finished with it.

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
My kit from GMC Paul's was about $500 shipped for the 6 lug kit. As long as I replace the pads on time, I should never need to replace the rotors.

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
I have a 67 c10 and just recently converted the front to disc brakes. I found a 72 c10 and used the A-arms, springs, and spindles from it. Then I had to buy new inner and outer tie rods with adj sleeves. Then comes the fun part. You have to decide whether you get the 72 drag link, pittman arm, and idler arm should bolt right up or I got a $25 taper drill bit from MATCO or SNAP-ON and just drilled out the drag link to fit the new inner tie rods. The kicker for me was the cost on the 6-lug rotors $200 but if you check your brakes regularly rotors will last a long time. I checked into making mine 5 lug but the cost for converting the rear end was quite alot of money.
$240-A-arms,springs,spindles $60- inner and outer tie rods $25-taper bit $200-rotors

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
the rotors i bought from ece where $85.00 a piece a couple of years ago.
i robbed a '72 of it's upper a-arms and spindles, complete steering linkage and steering box.installed new lower ball joints('71-72's are different). i also got the brake lines and master cylinder.i haven't went to power brakes as of yet but i will when i put it back together,if it ever gets out of the paint shop. longhornman is right a stock drum brake wheel will not fit on 6 lug disc brake rotors, but the majority of people here don't run factory wheels....imo hope this helps rusty |

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
Not too often. Personaly we get our cars checked every year. Full brake inspection and such. Our oldest truck, a 98 GMC Jimmy with nearly 160,000 miles doesnt need brakes yet. It varies from driver to driver I guess.

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
yes, it varies from driver to driver, but even if you replace your pads before they need it, your rotors will still wear, and the quality of rotors has gone to the crapper the last few years (not saying these aftermarket units... just in general).
I am also assuming this will be a driver. Nothing sucks worse than havin your driver (only car?) down for 3 days waiting for a part, when if you woulda gone another route, every parts house in the US woulda had the part. Wagon wheels are a dime a dozen, and no one will notice 5 and 6 lug. These trucks GROW in tx junk yards, I'm willing to bet you couldn't throw a dead cat in your junk yards there without hitting a 5 lug rear. (maybe not THAT common... but you get the idea) there's more than one way to do these things, and these are nothing but MY opinions... and why I feel the way I do. Just think about it. Also, if only one company makes these 6 lug rotors...what happens when they go belly up and stop selling them? |

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
True, on the Junkyards and such. Ill talk about this w/ my dad later tomarrow. Though I doubt only one company makes 6-lug rotars.
Ill take it all into consideration, Im new to these 67-72s anyways. Up until this truck came up, I had researched to do work on the 98 Jimmy, and build it up a bit. Funny how things change. |

Re: 6-lugs and disk brakes
As far as I know.. only one company makes these conversion 6 lug rotors, and all the vendors sell them.
