Why "don't like" better driveability and improved cruise fuel economy? It was added to increase ignition advance in conditions where the engine could tolerate it...EXACTLY like the modern computer-controlled engines like the LS series. It's not an emissions control device...although better combustion does reduce emissions.

I think of as a generic bandaid. A one size fits all fix to low octane/low compression EPA requirements. Anytime you "hop" up an engine, and you use vacuum advance, it should be tuned to respond to the engine mods.

I also subscribe to using full manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum for the vacuum advance, but this is on a modified engine with a larger cam. With a larger cam you have less vacuum at idle and by using manifold vacuum it can help with idle quality and throttle response.

Vacuum advance can be a good thing if properly tuned to the exact combo. A blanket statement that it is the only way to go..untuned..is not correct. As always this is just my opinion. Learned through my experiences. And god knows I don't know everything.
