Front Sheetmetal bolts?

I am getting ready to paint/reassemble the front sheetmetal on my 72 chevy, and have decided the stock bolts are rusty and ugly, and will not be using them. Most of them are 5/16 x 3/4", and I was wondering if I could just use stainless bolts/washers off the shelf vs. buying the "correct" ones from a truck supplier? I like the idea of something that won't rust like the last ones did.

No reason not to that I can think of. The originals have the captured washer and pointed threads, but I think that was just to help speed assembly on the line.

Re: Front Sheetmetal bolts?

Does anybody if you can buy body bolts by the pound anywhere? I doubt that they would be stainless if by the pound, but at least they'd be new and you could shoot a layer of paint on em..

Re: Front Sheetmetal bolts?

I'm not sure about body bolts by the pound, but I can get stainless everything through work, so I figure I might as well go that way. Aside from the lack of a pointed tip and captured washer, I don't see why I can't do it, so I'm going to go for it.
