does your 12v power wire to your coil go to a switched fuse?

i had the same problem with my HEI until i ran the 12v to a switched fuse.

It's hard to say with so few details but here are a couple of ideas.

Has i t been converted to an HEI dizzy?

Scratch that.

Has it been converted to an internal reg alternator?

Trace the wire that comes out of the distributor cap (hei) and see where it leads. That wire is what kills the ignition so if it always has power, you cant turn it off. If its plugged into the fuse panel, its probably not on a swichable igniton key hot plug, and thats why you cant shut it off.

Have you changed anything lately? There’s a wire on the new style alternator that will keep it running in connected.

The electric fan is wired directly to the battery so that wont do anything, also im pretty sure its to do with the alternator. so that should be a quick fix

Re: Why will me ignition turn on my motor, but not turn it off??

If the distributor is wired directly to the battery, your truck will run forever till you lift that wire. The coil on your distributor should be wired to a 12v ACC power, not constant power. This kills the power to the distributor when the truck is turned off. No power means no firing.

Re: Why will me ignition turn on my motor, but not turn it off??

The fans have to be wired through a coolant temperature sensing switch or they would run constantly. They might be wired through the ignition switch and powered on with the key. If so I agree with 70blowngmc about the relay.
They should be powered by a relay anyhow if run through the TSS.

check out this link and read paragraph 2. It shows how the engine could run if the alternator is wired wrong.

Makes sense to me....don't need heavy gauge wire running to the coolant switch. Much cleaner install. Actually, most switches aren't designed to operate the high amp draw of the fan itself.
