Painting Trans ????????
Hey all. I have a 700R4 trans in my 68 project truck. Running a 4 row factory style radiator with built in trans cooler and dual electric fans.
The trans case looks cruddy after all the paint and chrome went on the engine and frame. I want to paint it. I have heard this can hinder heat dissipation. Does anyone on here have a painted trans? Any probs? And advice? I guess that I can see the logic in this, but will it actually change things enough to overheat and kill the trans?

Re: Painting Trans ????????
the 2 main shops we deal with through work (hvy equipment, big diesels and the such) all paint there trannys. They do it as an ID of sorts. Personally, I think a tranny should be silver, but many ppl paint them, even go with clear and wet sand and rubbing them out.

Re: Painting Trans ????????
Same here. I painted my block gloss black so I went with silver with my trans and I think it looks good. Im a little stumped on what color to powdercoat the intake tho.

I am still gonna go the route of the ultra bell though...

Re: Painting Trans ????????
When I went through ASE for auto transmissions they were dead set against painting them.
I spent 2 days in class stripping my case that I got from Extner Transmissions and fount alot of problems with it. They left out filter screens in the valve body and the end play on the output and input shaft was way out of specs. Now honestly I dont have a trans temp gauge so I dont know if it changed the temp but down south here with an everyday driver I see it as going the safe route and doing anything to stay cool. If you clean the case up you can get them looking pretty good.

Re: Painting Trans ????????
i would think silver be best since it will reflect heat rather than black which holds heat

Information like this could put B&M and TCI outta business Personally, i like to just clean it up real nice before i put it back in. If I was creating an over the top, show vehicle, then maybe i would paint it, Otherwise i don't see the point. My motto: If it don't rust, it don't need no paint.

Re: Painting Trans ????????
I've also heard the "heat" thing. I talked to my tranny guy and he said for the amount of differance in heat it won't hurt anything to paint it.
I've also heard that Black actually pulls heat away and makes things cooler (motors, radiators, trannies) Not sure how true that is either

Re: Painting Trans ????????
I owned and still own VW aircooled cars( for over 12 years) and black paint or powdercoat (motors)has always cooled better then nonpainted surfaces, But even then it was only by about 20 degrees for powdercoat and 30 degrees for paint. But that is aircooled, I imagine the results would be less significant for fluid cooled

Re: Painting Trans ????????
I fogot to add one thing I learned about black. I painted a engine black in my race car looked at it at night under lights. WOW looked like there was oil leaking every where. Sooo that ones up to you. I still say PAINT IT! Just not gloss black imo.
