vortec heads

I have a rebuilt set of vortec 906 heads, I was told that the machine shop did a 3 angle valve grind, will they be as good as the 062 heads???

well heres every thing i have on the subject

i have 062's and did not buy 906's because i could not get that answer..i think any vortec head is going to be better than 90% of the OEM heads out there...with very little work,they are the hot ticket right now.

the 906 has a different exhaust seat..which is supposed to cut flow a tiny bit?

I new to posting on here so i'm trying to figure out how ad a link so you will have to go there on you own but sallee chevrolet discussion board has some info. Besides that I'v done alot of engine builds circle track and street. From what little experience I have had the 906 heads I have used worked great on claimer motors only changing valve spings. They do run 10 to 15 degrees hotter than most. Timing and jetting seem real important to these heads.

I guess I'm just hoping I haven't messed up by going with the 906 heads. I was wondering if a 3 angle valve job is possible to be done on the 906, and can I still get 350+ hp form them, I have a 350 bored 40 over, cam and carb still to be purchased.

I did a little research seems that the heads a basicly the same castings. They have different valve seats and such. Also when I changed my valve springs I had the machine shop cut the spring pockets to run larger diameter
springs. three angle valve job should be no problem. Do your research on cam and carb selection remember bigger is NOT always better unless you want to run wide open all day long. 350HP should be fairly easy to achive.

My recent trip to the machine shop that I have grown to trust told me that the 906 vortec heads are the least likely to crack. He said if I am looking for cores to get the 906's. Maybe just his 2 cents worth.

Well I'm gonna use them, and see how they perform, I guess they need to back to the machine shop and have work done for Lt1 springs, gonna run a hefty cam.

The 906's were used in heavy-duty trucks. They are the same casting, but they have Iconel, single-angle valve seats. If someone has gone in and done a 3-angle seat (likely replaced the seats) and reground or replaced the valves...then they're the same as all the others.

This machine work is kinda spendy, and it sounds like you got them from someone with no documentation - no machine shop bill. I would definitely pull a valve and make sure you have what you think you have if this is a performance application. If this is for your daily driver and you're not going over .450 lift on your cam...stop worrying

Have the machine shop double-check the valve seats while they have them apart.

I don't recommend the LT1/LT4 valve springs (P/N 12551483); they're cheap (~$40 for a set) but they are lift limited to .525 and the seat pressures aren't great for a big cam - LT1 builders are seeing valve float as low as 5200 RPM in some applications. IMHO there are far better springs available from CompCams and others...but admittedly at about 4x the price. They're GREAT for a stock-ish rebuild for less than .450 lift.

I agree that you don't need a big cam to make 350 HP, and at that build level you don't need to upgrade springs.

041and 041x heads Don't want to get of track on the original question but those heads were always really good on the track. And as for what ragn'rat said you could even get you gold frome someone doing a #'s matching build those heads are getting very hard to come by.

I wish! Unfortunately they were on a full size 1969 350. Evidently Chevrolet used the same casting number for several applications.

Regardless of what they were off of they are still a good set. same flow numbers as 186,461,461x (ie) fuelie heads, camel hump, but with the bolt holes in the front like the 186's they came in 1.94 and 2.02 intake valves under that same casting #
