how many times have you propped your mag light up on something to light up the tranny or what ever you are working on, only to have it fall over. The more effort you put into making it stay, the faster it falls... so it seems anyways.

I gave up on the coat hanger thing.
Domething I did do on my maglight, I got sick of it rolling off my tool box, or rolling away when under a truck, so I took a large Zip-Tie, tightened it up on the body, cut the remaining tplastic off, and used a razor to get it close enough to where the remains wouldn't cut my hand all the time... now it won't roll away.
That's pretty important on the rechargable ones like mine ( http://www.maglite.com/product.asp?psc=RECHARGE ) The bulb is way too easy to blow, and the best price I've found as of yet is 7 bucks a pop. Drop it once, and it's time for a new bulb. With the zip tie trick, I manage to make my bulb last 6 months or so, so i am back to making a profit on this light. I got a screaming deal on mine, it retails for 125 IIRC, and I got it for 85... I was going through well over 100 in batterys when i had the normal version, and this one is mega bright in comparison.
If you go through batterys a lot... I HIGHLY recomend the rechargable one.

not quite as nifty as it seems, nor is it the total life saver they want you to think it is... but for less than 10 bucks.... I give it a thumbs up.

I like the wire tie idea. thanks, I'll give it a try next time I use it.

side note, how many guys here use the Streamlight Stylus penlight? I have 2 and feel lost if I forget it at home. fits nicely in my shirt pocket next to my trusty freebie Bic clicker pen. (in my defense I am in no way a nerd or have a need for a pocket protector. I just like to be well equipped)

i have a streamlight pen light that never leaves my pocket and today i picked up a streamlight stinger that is brighter than the headlights on my truck

I have one MagLite left that actually works. When it quits it goes in the trash and I will never waste my money again. I love my Dewalt rechargable lights. I have 3 different styles now. I can't belive that the goofy looking snake light has become my favorite...

Thats been around for quite a while now and i almost bought one but i have
found that no matter what it still won't point the light right where you need it the most!

I too have fabbed up all sorts of holders/hangers and the light is never pointing where i want it.

The best thing iv'e come across yet is the Craftsman SS 1WATT LUXEON LED HEADLAMP ANY WHERE YOU LOOK THERES LIGHT! AND IT'S ONLY 25 BUX!

I know I don't post much, but would like to say a few words about the Mag Lite. Before being forced into early retirement I worked for Hitachi in Greenville, SC. We had a near fatal accident involving the Mag Lite. An electrician was working on a main electricial control box, using his small mag lite, he was bumped by a co-worker who was helping him, his hand slipped into the control box, there was a arc, and he was almost fused to the box because the power jumped to him through the mag lite. If there had not been anyone else around he would have been fried to a crisp, as it was he spent some time in the hospitial with severe burns. The company banned all metal flashlights, and even replaced them with rubber coated lights, even personal ones that people brought from home. I know that working on our trucks does not involve high voltage, but you never know . Just my 2 cents worth.

I use a 3watt Brinkman LED headlamp. Best thing i have found. I use that thing for everything from working on the truck to hunting and riding 4 wheelers

I have a retractable trouble light hanhing from the ceiling. I have been using those energy efficient florescent bulbs. They seem to be more durable, and dont leave you seeing spots.

Ah, come on now, am I the only one who has a snakelight? LOL!
I've got all kinds of lights in the shop, and seem to use them all at one time or another, and even the snakelight I got as a gift several years ago comes in pretty handy at times. The only kind I don't have is one of those headlights, I just always figured one of those would get in the way of banging my head on something, LOL!
