When trying to find an oil filter for my 1969 C10 pickup, only "Spin-on" types are listed. The parts store said that they went to the new filters from the old canister filters in 1969. This makes me believe that my engine is probably 1968. Is there anyway to identify the engine year. The VIN on the title says its a 1969 truck. I don't really care except for maintenance purposes it would be beneficial to get the correct parts.

Yes, 1969 pickups had canister oil filters. I purchased a new 1969 c/20 in 1969 with a 350 and it had a canister oil filter.

Hey B-dog.... Welcome to the forum from the snowbound tundra of Colorado.

The casting number for your engine is at the back... behind the driver side head where the block mates to the tranny.
From that number you can get the general year (s) produced, main bolts, etc.

I bought mine from the orig.owner and it had the canister.I put in the kit they sell everywhere that converts to spin-on. If you go this route make sure the gaskets are on there right and that it is torqued down to specs. (The filter catalogs are wrong,just like the Haynes that says 1970 was 1st year for truck 350s).

Thanks all. That gives me some comfort. By the way, I got this from my Dad two weeks ago that bought it in 1969 when I was 16 years old. I have a lot of sentimental attachment to this truck. It is still original and runs good. I don't want to do anything to it to mess it up.

I bought a conversion for my 68 and then the NAPA guy told me that it took a F*rd filter!
