swapping 700R4 for a SM465-now I'm confused!

I'm finding a lot of problems (and they're expensive to fix) and now I'm confused. after talking with Novac(k) it sounds as if the 'regular' 4x4 output trans shaft which needs to be installed, may be too long?? I know there is an adapter between the tranny and transfer case-how does the tranny output shaft and the input for the tranfer case actually meet? is the meeting inside the 3.5" adapter plate? Has anyone taken their 10 spline (sm465) transfer case input shaft out and swapped in the 27 spline (if so-how difficult??)?

if anyone has a tranny/TC adapter and/or a 205 transfer case which was originally connected to an auto tranny, for sale-let me know!

is there any benefit to a 10 spline vs a 27 spline input/output shafts?

thanks,
Paul

There is an NP 205 with the adapter for a 350 turbo available locally (Murfreesboro TN 37130) for $350. It is heavy, and will be expensive to ship, and there is no warranty. I do know that it came from a running truck, and was working. Past that, I don't know. I do have a 4x4 700 R4 from an 88, it LOOKS like it and the 205 from behind the 350 will work.

A regular 700 4x4 output shaft is too long to mate to an NP205 with adapter. Advance Adapters makes the proper shaft. The trans and TC are connected by a sleeve in the adapter. As far as spline count is concerned, the more splines-the stronger.

The easiest way out would be to get the TH350 transfercase and adapter. You could also swap out the input on your existing transfercase but will still need the adpter which is no longer avilable from Chevy. In either case you will need to swap the output shaft on the 700R4 to the one made by advance adapters. You can check with these guys here http://www.4xheaven.com/ they may have some more answers for you. Good luck.

I think you can do it one of two ways, first a new output shaft on the trans.(what i did) or I belive Advanced Adapters has a adapter housing which will bolt onto the back of the trans. allowing you to use the orignal shaft. With a th350 t-case adapter. (I do not have first hand knowlage of the latter)
