redo original seat or put in from another truck

I have a truck I'm going to keep somewhat original. Probably keep the orig steering wheel. I want a comfortable seat in it. Many of you have done this so tell me.

Should I redo an original style seat or grab one from a 88 up style chevy truck. This is going to be work truck and I'll probable keep the vinyl on it. I will use this truck for work and cruise. No show boat tweed here.

I contemplated this very question for a long time. My original '68 bench seat was shot. I ended up getting a bench seat ouf of a '91 and slapping it in there pretty easily. Just need to recover now. Will take a pic and post.

Money wise a nice used 88-up would be good, compared to redoin' the stock one.

How well do these newer seats mount up to the 67-72 floors? Do they go in pretty easy or is there some modifications that need to be made? I've thought about going with a later model seat in mine as well.

I was thinking about doing the same thing. Saw it done in a couple of trucks and want to do it. My question is where do you find a solid bench? All the ones that I find are split 60/40

Regular cab 88-98 basic trucks will be full bench, if you can find them. They were and still are a hot commodity in the yards (at least here). Moutning is simple, and yes you need to drill at least two holes, but the comfort is well worth it to me. I just never cared for the stock benches of the pre 87 trucks. Way too uncomfortable to me. Some like them and they are easy enough to recover, so you could go either way depending on your prefference. Chances are you might not find a late model seat in the color you want, so you would be recovering it too. Again in my opinion it is still worth it. Go later model.

I recovered my '69's original seat with a vinyl kit from LMC. It was very easy, and is comfortable enough for a work truck.

I will be doing a write up and photos in 40/20/40 seats out of a 04 Silverado here in a couple of weeks once I'm ready to install them. Not sure if you can wait that long.

Just my $0.02, but i would think the 60/40 would be more desirable as it can recline, giving you a little bit of adjustment.

I had the solid bench in my 89 k1500 W/T and hated it. It hurt my back driving it, because the seat back was too straight, and did not recline at all. I swapped for a 60/40 from a 93 extended cab, and it made all the difference in the world.

My vote would be to stay original w/ a replacement seat cover. Just a few hours and a day of sore fingers from the hogrings......but then again, I did mine with the 'showboat tweed'

I saw a guy at a car show a while back that put a leather back seat out of a tahoe in his '70 truck. It looked and fit amazing. Said he paid $350?

I have had a few original seats redone and they were perfectly comfortable. As long as the foam is in decent shape or repaired I would think the stocker will do just fine.

I bought my 72 from my dad in 96'. He had the seat reupholstered, and the guy added foam in the lower back of the bench. It supports the back pretty well, and you can take road trip's without switching from cheek to cheek half way there. I say go stock.

On the other hand...a newer 40/20/40 would be nice, with the center back flipping down to hold drinks and act as a arm rest.

Okay, I had my seat recovered (pics to come soon) but can someone please take a picture of the passenger side retainer on the passenger seat track? It will not lock on the passenger side as soon as weight is put on it. Thanks, Justin

being an upholsterer, Any seat can be made "comfortable". But you would have to weigh your cost. You have different density foam. harder, softer & so on so on .Go to a good local upholstery shop and get quote's tell them what you want.

I have a 94 bench seat in my 72 , it's just in place not bolted up or anything , i think i would go with the original , i don't see where this seat would recline too far cuz it hits the cab , also it's about an inch taller than my original, it probably can be seen thru the back window , my rear glass has tint film on it so you cant really see in . Other than that it's real comfy , you're going to pay a bit unless you get lucky , these seats fetch good money at the wreckers . Just my opinion , though .

i am very interested to see that! i am wanting to do the exact same in my truck... what part of arizona are you from? i am located in the east valley. whatnow123 would be willing ot share where you were able to find your seat???

Don't rule out other makes, I got a one out of of '85 Ford for $50 that is sharp. Was gonna go with a '88 or up,but this one saved me at least $200

I vote re-do the original. I just like the looks of 'em better. The lines are clean, and seem to fit the rest of the truck's style better'n a later model. They look a little out of place to me.

But...I bet the newer ones are a bit more comfy.

IMO the old benches I've seen sit too high and feel bouncy like a trampoline. Not a huge fan of that. I could deal with the bouncy-ness if the seat frame was modded to mount the entire seat lower (like a peterbilt truck ), but it would probably be easiest, and most comfortable to go with the newer style. GM (and other companies ) redesigned bench seats and everything else throughout the years to be better. So it really just comes down to what you prefer.

What about some buckets from a later model truck? Anyone done some of them? If so did you use an original console or use the later model console with the seats? I've thought about trying some bucket seats from a 99 or up Chevy or GMC. I would like to use the integrated seat belt so I won't have to drill into my cab to mount a three point seat belt. Any ideas on that one?

I was thinking the bench from the last generation Sonomas, with the flip up arm rest would be nice. Their comfy, just not sure on the width. (reminds me to go measure the GMC.)

If not that, on mine we might stick a Benchseat w/ armrest from a DeVille
