Pulling Steering Wheel from a '64

trying to learn from my past experiences. going to eventually replace my steering wheel and I am not seeing a obvious way to do it...anyone out give me some pointers?

I found a great puller from Harbour Freight

I use a cheap harbor freight one as well, but any parts store has them for cheap.




what shape is you're old wheel in? Are you going to get rid of it?

ok-steering wheel puller....is it actually listed as a steering wheel puller?

its in pretty bad shape, you can have it if you want it...its going to be a while though, not sure when I am going to do it

5-10 bucks at harbor fright,or go to Autozone they "rent"them for free.

If I understanding your questions correctly, you are wishing to remove the steering wheel from the upper end of the shaft. Correct?

Before you spend money for a puller, you may want to try the following “poor man’s” method. I’ve used it many times.

1. Do what it takes to remove the horn button to get the retainer nut that holds the wheel to the shaft. (Depending on the type of horn button, this is done a couple ways.)
2. Once there, loosen the retainer nut, but don’t take it all the way off. Loosen it until it is level with, or extends past, the end of the steering shaft.
3. Now, go dig in your toolbox and find an “old” deep socket smaller than the retainer nut and a big hammer. (You will use the old socket as a drift)
4. Enlist the assistance of a helper, (If you are married and wish to remain so, I would suggest someone other than your wife.)
5. Sit in the driver’s seat, grasp the steering wheel and pull with all your might. (As if to pull it off the end of the shaft)
6. At the same time, have your helper place the socket on the retainer nut and strike it hard with the hammer. (As if to drive it through the wheel)
7. The wheel should pop loose on the shaft splines. Remove the retainer nut and the wheel.

If this don’t work, you can always spend money for a puller.

hmm...thanks for the pointers...think i cand actually borrow a puller so gonna go that route....visions of hammers wackin' stuff other than the steering wheel are running through my head....

...do you have the delux horn ring or the center button? if you have the delux horn ring DON'T RUIN IT!!! some guy on e-bay sold one for $200 bucks! I'm keeping mine!!

its the center button and is in bad shape, if it was the deluxe would not want to replace it...have seen the prices on the deluxes on ebay...crazy....may end up going that route
