new 7004r rolls in park

i have just installed a 700r4 into a friends 1976 chevy van. i have attached the shifter and the thing roll reguardless of what gear its in. what might be causing this? how many gears does the 700r4 have that the shifter could go through?

Are you sure that you have the gear selector indexed correctly? It should have 7 positions. Park, Reverse, Neutral, Overdrive, 3,2,1.
The previous tranny probably only had 6 positions.

You could always pop the linkage off, and try to put it in park by hand. That way you'll know for sure if the problem is the trans or the linkage.

I'd disconnect the linkage, place it in park on the tranny, see if it doesn't roll. If it doesn't roll, put the shifter in Park and connect the linkage and see what happens.

well the original transmision was a th350. when i jam the shifter all the way to park, it goes as far down as it goes and still rolls. i will do it by hand and get back to yall.

Re: new 7004r rolls in park

I have seen brand new transmissions come in from GM hydromatic and Allison with missing park pawl tangs on brand new trucks before. Maybe your trans builder forgot to install the tang. Disconnect the linkage then shift the trans into park by the selector shaft on the actual transmission first though, as others have stated.

Re: new 7004r rolls in park

I would take the linkage off the transmission and turn the U-shape gear selector on the transmission all the way clockwise. It should have park if everything is right with the transmission. The U-shape piece is different from a truck to a van and they don't swap in one another at all. It will bolt up and work but your wont have park. On the van when its in park the u-shape piece on the trans should be strait up and down like 12 and 6. The one for a truck when its in park is slanted like about 10 and 4 all the way clock wise in park.

I don't think the shifter should need adjusted to get park . The only thing I would say it would need adjusted for is to get 1st gear. But that will keep the other gears from being right. The steering column is for a three speed not four so it doesn't let it down in 1st gear. You should be able to get all the other gears fine (Park Neutral Overdrive Drive Manual 2nd).
