Main seal question.
I have my pan off and am going to replace the main seal It’s not leaking, but I figured it should done while I’m in there. This is a good idea isn’t it? I also wanted to know about the oil pump. Should I do anything with it while it’s exposed?
What was the brand name for the one-piece oil pan gasket? Thanks, s/t

i would leave the main seal alone if its not leaking you got to remove tranny to get to it and could cause front pump seal to get torn coming out just more work to do
but if you drop the oil pan and replace gasket it would be a good time to change oil pump and screen with new oil shaft

I wouldn't mess with it if it's not leaking. I faced the same decision when I did the oil pan gasket in my 72 402. I decided to not do it. You don't need to pull the tranny.

The engine is out now. Where is this pump seal you mentioned? I'll make sure its not already torn.

if the seal isnt leaking, leave it alone, how many miles on the motor? if you need a new pump then you probably need a complete rebuild. Felpro makes 1 piece gasket but are expensive, use ROL or ask engine shop what they carry.

I'm in the same place as you are right now, engine out, 78K mi but it sat for 7 years and it's a mess. I'm doing my seal since it is leaking (I think) but going to leave the pump alone. I have good oil pressure and most guys said to just leave it alone. If you get a stock replacement then you have to put the pickup screen in place, PITA so I hear. Some from summit already have it welded in place on the new pump.

Replace the seal, use a one piece pan gasket gasket, and put a little gasket sealer onto the corners of your main bearing cap. If the pan is off changing the rear main seal won't take much longer and will save a ton of headaches WHEN it leaks if you do not do it now. The one piece gasket is worth the price difference hands down - even if you have to collect cans and take them to the recycler to pay for it - I hate leaky oil pans.

There is no evidence of oiling leaking at the rear main. But figured if there’s no danger or harm installing a new one, thought I might.
Same with the oil pump, seems to be fine.

i've found changing rear main with the crank in isn't a slamdunk for a no leak job//if your determined to change the seal yank the crank freashen up the bearings heck its not that much more to slap a set of rings and a hone job dont forget the new timing chain maybe slip a new cam in while you got it accessable
