Rear axle u-bolt torque?? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The manual is a bit confusing on how much to torque the rear axle u-bolts on a 2wd, 12 bolt, with the inverted square bolts (nuts under the axle). I have new 1/2 u-bolts. Thanks in advance. Greg

225 ft lbs it is not fun getting them to the setting. although the manual says 195-225, I went with the higher number.

I didn't use a torque wrench on mine because of the wierd position I was in, but three long grunts pulling the bar with all my weight should have brought it close

Wrench until it hurts, then 1/4 more and you should be about right.

It too a 36" breaker bar and both legs to get mine off. After that, getting them on was easy.

tighten them until they squeak...then half a turn

Dang, that's sounds like alot for a 1/2" bolt. I'd hate to see what the 4wd u-bolts torque to, since they're a little bigger. Thanks, Greg

I torqued mine with a 30 inch bar, and all the strength I could muster. Not looking forward to ever taking them back off.

if you going to take them off i would just cut them off and put new u bolts on
no grunt work here

I dont have a manual and im no expert but 225 ft lbs seems crazy.
i can tell you that every nascar team runs the same rear suspension as our trucks and with 3/4 inch u bolts torqued to 100 ft lbs.
Im suprised they dont snap at 225 ???
