Re: Timing Question?
What are you running for timing now? Does the truck have an HEI distributor, or is it still the older points style dizzy?
I usually start my engines at a 10 degree intial timing setting and then work my way up from there. I purchased a timing light with the advance feature on it and since then I now set my timing at a "TOTAL ADVANCE" number of 35 degrees or in that area. I also set my idle adjustment screws with a vacuum gauge, rather than just listening to idle speed change, to get the best idle mixture set up for daily driving. |

Re: Timing Question?
as much as this has been a thread issue before, i still say the balancer marks are never on the money and power timing is the best for your application.

Re: Timing Question?
With what you have for a timing light, I would pull the vacuum hose and plug it, set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC, put the vacuum hose back on and then drive it. The next thing that I would do, is to advance the initial timing to 12 degrees and drive it again. Listen for spark knock or pinging under acceleration, also look for engine "Run-On" when you shut it off. I would expect that you will settle around the 12 to 15 degree timing area. This will give you a good operating area and a decent performance. Take time to mark your timing marks on the balancer so that it is easy to time the motor, the balancer is fine at this point.
If you decide on a different timing light, at some time, Sears sells an excellent advance unit for a really decent price. Last edited by piecesparts; 02-09-2007 at 07:12 PM. |
