Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
Hi, to all the members. I just bought a 68 or maybe a 71 Chev? I'm not sure which exactly. The title says 68 Chev, but the VIN as decoded was 71. The metal VIN # has been replaced and all the paperwork agrees, as far as 68 model and the 1971 VIN # which is odd. I think it was probably wrecked years ago, and a 71 GMC front end was put on and the VIN was changed then to reflect that or hide the fact it was salvage titled. The VIN tag is rivited on, but it doesn't say from what state. I can tell it came into Calif. in 2004 from the title. In any case it has the 68 "Custom Cab" plate on the outside of the door. The truck has drum brakes on the front. It has a 64-66 or so steering wheel which is on a factory tilt colum, (I was raised driving a 64 so I know what the steering wheel looks like), It has the big emergency brake handle like the 64 did, only its chrome plated, it's under the steering wheel and is a big lever. It has a V8 with 3 speed auto and a factory tachometer which still works. It appears to have the 68 door upholsstery on it which is embossed and cover approx. the middle section of the door. I think its a 68 because of the drum brakes and emergency brake.

Does the front clip look like a 67-68 or a 69-72? Everything you describe would make me think 68 except for the Vin decoding. Are you sure you decoded it correctly?

No telling, these trucks are so easy to mix and match parts off of. Sounds like a 68 chassis to me (71 would have disc brakes up front).

Curious what VIN is stamped into the frame. It's on the top of the left frame rail right behind where the steering gearbox is. Does is match the title? What shape are the heads of the rivots that hold the cab VIN on? Round? or kinda six sided(have to look close to see)?

Re: Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
Is the VIN-plate factory or a DMV one?Are you talking about the one in the door jamb? The VIN# is also on the left frame rail top flange. The tilt column is`69-up.The steering wheel sounds like a 67/68 as well as the brake lever. The dash should have a manual choke location, too.

Re: Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
I'll have to check the frame rail for another ID. It has the dual GMC headlights and no patchwork of wiring, it all looks factory so they did a lot of work. Also found out lastnight as I was looking at the title it was brought into California in 2004.

Re: Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
They prolly just used the underhood harness from the GMC donor. It`s just a plug at the firewall. Most likely you`ll find you just have a front clip from a`71 GMC on a`68 Chevy and the`71 GMC VIN-plate was used.Yet,it`s titled as the`68 still. You can`t get this straight with the previous owner?The`71 VIN# will not detect a Chevy or GMC w/o looking deeper into the numbers.

Re: Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
actually, if you try to decode a GMC vin on a chevy decoder, you'll be confused and scratching your head.
Can you post your VIN... leaving off the last 5 numbers if you feel threatened that some one will steel your trucks ID. The one problem you'll have, is the Republic of Cali will give you a REAL hard time if your stuff ain't right. |

Re: Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
Thanks for the welcome I've got some pictures of the truck that I took, I'll see about getting them on here. I did look for another vin on the frame and its the same vin for a 71. I looked at the vin tag on the door frame and its a replacement by California Bureau of Automotive repair. So I think the truck is a 71 and I guess the 68 for the model year is just a mistake for who knows how long.

Re: Is this a 68 or 71 Chev?
That looks to be a 71 up GMC grille since the accents in the grille are black. I like how they frenched the 66 or 7 nova tailights in the fenders. Looks to be a real nice truck.
