Re: tach

Right before the great "stock tachs suck for accuracy" thread on this forum I bought a used tach dash off the parts list. Before I got it installed I decided to go with a new aftermarket tach.

I had the factory setup for a template. I had a complete gauge setup minus the speedo that I bought at a swap for $1. A $1 setup is a perfect candidate to go under the knife.

I had a hole saw that was near the same size as the original tach hole. I used the factory tach tin to help me figure out where to drill. NOTE that the tach hole is NOT in the middle of the hole in the bezel. It is offset down to account for the fact that when installed you will be looking down at an angle.

I had to fab a bracket to hold the back of the tach. Since this was metal I used that paint-on rubberized coating on the edges so my printed circuit doesn't get rubbed through.

While I was at it I installed a "Quartz" clock out of a mid-80s Sub that I found in the yard. That thing is VERY accurate.

Somebody on this list suggested a heated nail to make the hole in the factory lens. This worked good. I would guess that drilling a hole would chip or crack the 35 year old plastic.

Finally I used plastic polish to remove factory markings on the lens in front of the previously empty gauge spots.

Note that in the 2nd picture I used a 4-wire trailer plug on the tach connections. That way I can remove the dash bezel if I need to.

Re: tach

Nice, dmec. What did your oil, bat and temp gauges come out of? Looks to give a lot more detailed info. Looks great w/ the camaro tach. I want to get that quartz clock, too.

Re: tach

Here is what I just did, bought the dash assembly and added the tach... because, well, I can't just leave well enough alone.

Re: tach

I bought an AutoMeter (10,000 rpm) tach on e-Bay and plan on running it on the 4 cyl mode to make it a 5k tach. I'm going to get a tach gauge bezel for the numbers.

I sanded and painted the face and added a shortened speedo needle. It's not done yet, but it's coming together nice:

It's a new gauge line that Checker/Kragen or whatever they are called now has. I was buying some hoses and they had the display behind the counter, I went home and grabbed my busted up cluster and went back to check the fit. It fit right in there so I bought it. Didn't realize that the white part didn't exactly match, but I can live with it for the price I paid all tolled.
