How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

I am about to buy a 1971 Chevy 1/2 ton LB 2Wd truck that has 64,000 original miles from a guy but he has no title. The owner died and he bought it after it sat for 10 years now it has been sitting for 10 more and I want it. The truck has not been licensed for 20 years. If I can't get a title its not worth the hassle. Even though it is a 350, ps, pb, air, tilt, running truck! Anybody know of a title service I can contact? Missouri DMV is a real pain to deal with. I know that some states didn't even title vehicles until the mid 70's and sometimes you can sell the truck to them and buy it back and obtain a title that way. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You can apply for a lost title. They will check to make sure it’s not stolen then give you a title.
Good luck.

Check with your state first, before buying it.

some states put you through hell, before they will issue a "lost title"

Do a search for "my dillema" posted by me. it documents the struggles i went through trying to get a title for my truck. I finally had to replace the vin Plate, *cough *cough, i mean, Buy a different truck and swap the cab, *cough *cough

File for a lost title first. If you don't have luck let me know. I am parting a 71 cab out with a good title and tag. Pm me your VIN and I will compare.

Or try and get it abandoned by a mechanics shop or car lot, they can have a title in 60-80 days.

Re: How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

I've used Broadway Title before. No problems It takes about two or three months but then just like they said one day I got my paperwork from them and all I had to do was go to my DMV and they issued me a new title on the spot. I think it cost me about $160 +/-

Re: How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

Sounds like Broadway is the way to go. Missouri really sucks when it comes to vehicles! Applying for a lost title is impossible if you don't know the owner and can contact them to sign off on it. Troy-built I will keep you in mind. Thanks

Re: How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

I had to get a bonded title in Texas not too long ago. Here its pretty easy.

Anyway, I did some digging on the MO DMV web site. It appears that you can have the current owner fill out an Abandoned Property Affidavit (DOR-4576) and
Abandoned Property Bill of Sale (DOR-4579). With these, you can probably fill out an application for a title in your name.

I can't say for sure that it will work in your state, but the forms exist, so it should be doable.

Re: How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

Thanks for the help, I looked at that form and it needs to be filled out by the city/county clerk. I don't think it will work if I am actually buying it from an individual. I will contact broadway title and see what they say. thanks

Re: How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

My stepdad had a '57 Chevy Pickup with no title. I'm not sure how he pulled it off, but the DMV was able to find a copy of the lost title on microfilm at the Jefferson City office. I'd talk to your local lisence office and go from there. If there was one for his truck, which had been off the road for maybe 20 years, i'm betting there is one for yours.

Re: How do I get a title for a 71 truck ?

I am sure that somewhere there is a title, but the guy died 20 years ago, and the guy I bought it from has had it for ten years. There are plates on it from 1986, been a while. I am waiting to see what broadway title has to say. Thanks
