general motors argentina back in the days

Re: general motors argentina back in the days

Cool.

Translated with free online translater so it may not make sence in some places but you get the idea.

Quote:
The automobile INDUSTRY Argentina is developed extraordinarily within the Latin American comparative scope.
A clear idea of its importance is revealed in which, in the last twelve years, the industry has put in circulation near two million units that have allowed the renovation of the 85 percent of the national vehicle park. For this it uses more than 35.000 people and it has already reached the second place of production, being surpassed east index only by Brazil.
The importance of the industry in the Argentine economic field also shows by the high integration of national elements in the productive process and the great development of the annexed industries of parts and accessories, such as cushioning, means, tires, etc.
The direct promotion on the part of the Argentine Government of the automotive industry, one began in 1958 with a decree that, in just a short time, it allowed the installation of 21 automobile plants that, through the years and by natural process of concentration, they have been reduced to eight.
General Motors Argentina are a typical example of the vitality of the automobile industry of that nation and for that reason we presented/displayed in this number a review of its development and present production.
The history of the company begins in 1925, and already three years later, in the plant of assembly located in Cabins - industrial zone of the Federal Capital vehicles are armed that between years 1936 and 1938 arrived at 120 daily units. In 1939 in the locality of San Martin, contiguous to the Federal Capital, the first buildings of the manufacturing plant were constructed.
In those facilities the first Chevrolet light trucks and trucks made under protection of in 1960 Bedford Diesel with national content and the regime of protection of the automotive industry put Argentina in use by the respective decree of 1958. Two years later Those models left the assembly line the first automobiles Chevrolet 400 that had initially a 40 percent of
national content were the base for the later manufacture of automobiles Chevrolet Special, the Super ones, the Super De Luxe, super Sport and the more recently Sport Rally, the first and last one of which they continue taking place.
Year 1970 marks several Argentina types and one of them is the inauguration and beginning of its new plant of matricería, that with a total surface of 22,000 square meters it will be able to also satisfy not only the necessities with the company but with the other automotive companies and the requirements of the industry in general, local as as much foreign.
They work in the plant, located in the complex of San Martin, 143 machines with a capacity of 1.440.000 hours man of work per year, which almost represents the 50 percent of the capacity of matricería of the country.
By its magnitude and operational capacity he is greatest of Argentina and most modern of Latin America and one calculates that it will allow to the country a currency saving considered in 15 million annual dollars. Between its machines, great part of which they are of Argentina industry, are copiers, heavy machines, medium and conventional light, presses of smaller and greater adjustment and equipment of movement of materials, those that allows medium and heavy the accomplishment of tasks of matricería, maquinados heavy, toolbox, calibers and other works in general.
Chassis for truck or omnibus with motor Bedford Diesel 350; also one makes with motor to gasoline of six cylinders, both in 4 versions and sizes different to lead different loads and weights. General Motors of Argentina also make Delco batteries, generator set and units of force with motor Bedford Diesel
the Chevrolet VAN, one of automotive the commercial ones that can be prepared, or like fungón integral, with two lateral doors and two of back load, or also as a ambulance or slight transport, in order to lead students to the establishments
With its installation the surface covered with the plant of San Martin has risen to 97,751 m2 and the installed power to 21,500 KVA, reaching the total surface of.the plant of San Martin to 297,435 m2 and the one from 45,564 Cabins to m2. In December of 1970 the amount of people occupied in the plant of San Martin ascended to 5.020, whereas the one of Cabins it were of 2.165.
Educative plan
All that personnel highly is enabled to fulfill its different tasks.
For them the company has different plans from education and qualification between which are the courses of managemental training, the technical courses for employees and of conduction for supervisors and overseers, the scholarships in local institutions and the shipment of advanced university students and professionals to the General Motors Institute, in the United States the only enterprise university totally in charge of a company.
In addition from 1968 a technical school works in the same facilities of the plant of matricería in which to courses for herramentistas and matriceros with the collaboration of the National Council of Technical Education are dictated. In this program of qualification General Motors Argentina it has invested until the present approximately 450,000 dollars, amount that includes/understands the wages of the workers who use the totality of their schedules of work in the attendance to the classes. With those of the last year the withdrawn ones reach 180, most of which they remain in the company evolving like inspectors of matrices, plotting sketchers, modelistas in plastic, wood and telgopor, matriceros of bank, close fitting jackets and fresadores.
Inner Vista of the new situated plant of matricería in the complex of San contiguous Martin to Buenos Aires and where is installed 143 machines with capacity of 1.440.000 hours man of work per year, which can be considered as the fifty percent of the capacity of matricería whereupon tells to Argentina
well-known the Chevrolet light truck as “the Brave one” were, in its class, the sold vehicle more of all the industry in the Argentine market with a total of 7,502 units in 1970. It is driven by a motor of six cylinders and economic consumption
This way: General Motors Argentina, to the time that contributes to the technical formation and the qualification of the young people of the country, it even reunites personal highly efficient what constitutes a determining factor in the obtaining of the quality of its products, base fundamental of the constant progress of the company
Another outstanding fact during year 1970 is that the company registered in those twelve months the greater amount of sales of automotive from its installation in the country 46 years ago.
The number record was of 34,638 units, of which 23,952 corresponded to automobiles for passengers. This last amount meant that during year 1970 the Chevrolet cars, in its different models, they were those of greater sale between the automobiles of all the marks of great size made in the country.
But not only in which one talks about to automobiles for passengers they beat record. The Chevrolet light truck to gasoline, well-known like “the Brave one”, as well it was sold of the Argentina industry, with a total of 7,502 units, whereas the sales of trucks and chassis for omnibus ascended to 3.184.
These numbers imply an increase in the sales of General Motors Argentina in 1970 of a 20.3 percent in relation to 1969, whereas the total market of automotive had in the country an increase of the 5.9 percent. It has meant in addition, that the company, although it only participates in the sector of the market of great vehicles of passengers, have obtained the second place, as far as sales one talks about, of the automotive industry of the country.
The Chevrolet Special, in the photo, it is the Model of the General Motors Argentina that in the present market of the considered cars great has been put within reach of the greater amount of adquirientes. The success of the company, with diverse models, it has allowed him to reach the second place, in the sales of the Super national
industry the “Sport one” is a sport version of the totally new Chevy, introduced in the market in December of 1969, several changes became that improved their operation, although the body almost continues being the same
Great part of the success achieveed in the 1970 production, it must be attributed to the enormous acceptance reached in 1970 by an introduced totally new model to the market in December of 1969, of design similar to the Chevrolet Nova made in the United States. We talked about the model “Chevy”, sedán of 4 doors in which its main outer characteristic is the back line “fast back”, that combined with the hood of great length and its little height, the body of the Chevy
offers excellent aerodynamic propertieses is formed by an integral unit welded to the floor and an average frontal chassis that great torsional resistance gives to the set and one more a more permanent alignment of the front train. The frontal suspension is independent with means in spiral and the back of longitudinal elastics. Its trail is widest of the Argentina industry and his under center of gravity it confers much stability and security to him. The column of the direction is compressed before a high pressure in the case of frontal collision.
The motor of the Chevy is of 6 cylinders in line, 230 inches cubical (3,769 cm3) and 130 HP. of power. The power. The compression is from 7.5 to 1, what it allows him to use common gasoline.
The Chevy also makes in a Sport “Super” version, presented/displayed in the first months of 1970, in that changes were introduced that increased his perfomance and heightened their outer and inner aspect, although the body is basically the same one. The motor that impels it is of 250 inches cubical (4,100 cm3) with 6 cylinders in line and 155 HP. of power. In its interior one stands out by its individual anatomical seats between which is the handle to the floor that commands the box of speeds of four synchronous marches.
The public acceptance of the Sport Super model marks another one of the successes of the General Motors Argentina in 1970. As much it is so the Argentina Association de Periodistas of the Industry and Automotive Comercio, that it groups to the most outstanding specialized cronistas, it chose the 25 of Super last November to the Sport one like the automobile of the year. “Chevy SS Coupe”, whose design accentuates the Super sport characteristics of the Sport one, giving one more a smoother line him, of greater aerodynamic penetration through its smaller height and greater inclination of the windshield and the back window, the best car of the national industry by the jury of Expo-Car 71 inner Vista
of Chevy “SS Coupe” was considered, similar to Super the one of Sport and in which the individual seats stand out reclining and a handle to the floor, that it commands the box of speeds of four synchronous marches and complete instruments
These same reasons decided to General Motors to send to the market, by the end of the last year, a new car based on he himself design and body, the model “Chevy SS Coupé” - two doors whose modern design accentuates the Super sport characteristics of the Sport one giving one more a smoother line him of greater aerodynamic penetration, through its smaller height and greater inclination of the front windshield and the back window. The motor is of Super characteristics similar to the Sport one but given its greater speed it consists of a double circuit of attended hydraulic brakes that in the front wheels are equipped with discs and in the back of drum with autoajustables shoes.
With this model SS Coupé, General Motors the best car of the national industry by the jury in charge has obtained a new award to the denominated being to adjudge the prizes to the participants in the denominated sample Expo-Car 71 that took place in Sea of the Silver at the beginning of 1971.
Aside from the three versions of the Chevy already mentioned, they complete the line of automobiles for passengers, the Chevy Delux, that it corresponds to an automobile concept of great suntuosidad, the Sport Rally, sport model with price of medium car, and the Special, that in the present market of the called cars great it is the vehicle that has been put within reach of greater amount of purchasers.
Other Products
the Chevrolet light truck, denominated “the Brave one”, he is another one of the General Motors products. It is driven by a motor of six cylinders of low consumption and equipped optativamef1te with differential “Posi-track” that gives one better traction of the wheels in the mud and the sand. It is offered with box of wide load and narrows, dirt road like van, double cabin ambulance or rural light truck.
Also they make chassis for trucks and omnibus with motor to gasoline of 6 cylinders in line or Bedford Diesel 350, in four different versions and sizes for loads and different weights. Delco batteries also make, generator sets and units of power with motor marine Bedford Diesel and motors and for cosechadoras of the same mark.
Of all the exposed one it is let see clearly the might of the General Motors Argentina that, with its industrial complex, it contributes certainly to the strength of the industry of its country.

you are correct and IIRC the had to change the name because no one wanted a car that blatantly "didn't go"

Most of the Nova's sold in spanish speaking countrys were called the Chevy Series II. Along with the SS models, most of which had 6 banger engines. What's really interesting is the body style used for the US in 68 to 72 was built for latin countries well up to 1978 after the US nova had two more stlying changes (73-74 and 75-79).

I've got a 69 Nova myself so the latin market Novas are really cool to me. Thanks for the pics!
