I am restoring a 68 C-10 and want to convert the rear to 5 bolt. I have a 71 1/2 ton that has a five bolt drum to drum; however, it is 3 inches wider than the rear from the 68 which would make the axle tubes extend out 1.5 inches too far. The mounting purches are the same distance, which leads me to believe it will bolt in. Question is this. Why is it wider and can I use it? If I cannot use it, I will have to buy new axles and a carrier to go to 5 lug posi. Any information will be much appreciated.

What is the actual measurement from out side to out side of unit you are wanting to install? from out side of drum to out side of drum. This may fit depending on the back spacing of the wheels you plan to use? My .0.2%

IN mid 1970 the rears were widened about 1.5 inches ( at the backing plate) to match the width of the Disk front end. You could use the axles in your current one, but you would need a spacer built so the brake backing plate would mout correctly. Best bet is find a complete axle from a 71/72 and swap the entire assembly.

You can get a new set of 5-lug axles made for the 67-8 rear for $225 for the pair? Why not just buy new axles? In my opinion I wouldn't trust 35+year old axles, would you!?
