Belt's & Pulley's
I'm getting ready to put the engine back in my 1970 GMC.
The engine was not in it when I purchased it. I'm not sure if I have the correct pulleys for it or not. Does anybody have detail pictures of the pulley's with belts for power steering pump below the alternator mounted on the drivers side of the engine compartment. Thanks for any help. Cheers Chad |

Re: Belt's & Pulley's
Yep, that's the long water pump (LWP) setup and what I use too. I have the brackets if you need them and I believe they're still available from http://www.classicperform.com/. There are aftermarket options as well.

Mark,
That is a very nice picture of your short water pump pulley setup. Nice work! Jim |

Re: Belt's & Pulley's
Is that the SWP setup? I have this on my LWP; could be a PO refit

Re: Belt's & Pulley's
I have discovered a number of different PS pulley combinations.. One like rage'nrat638's.. using a cast iron two groove power steering crank pulley and a very flat pulley on the PS pump..
Another one like that's on my 71 4X4 burb with AC.. which uses a stamped steel double groove alt/AC pulley and a stamped steel single groove power steering pulley with a "coned" power steering pump pulley Here's my setup.. Last edited by Livrat; 12-20-2006 at 09:26 PM. |

IIRC the SWP has the PS pump mounted higher and uses a bracket on the exhaust man, Right? I’ll admit I’m new to all this American stuff, and you guys are confusing me a little. I don’t want to hi-jack this thread, but can somebody tell me if there’s an advantage running a LWP over a SWP or vice versa? Or is it just what ever you have that works? DMX |

Re: Belt's & Pulley's
The picture of the pulley setup taken by rage'nrat 638 is definitely a short water pump setup. The lwp has large gap between the pump and the timing cover while the swp is almost tight to the cover.
Also, on the short water pump setup, the crank pulley is tight to the balancer as seen on rage'nrat's picture. Jim |

It appears I do have the correct parts that were included with a wood crate in the truck. Any idea where I can get some of the origional spark plug heat shield's....... Cheers Chad |

Re: Belt's & Pulley's
I did alot of reading on this too. the best advise i got was to get everything off one truck that had what you want, but if you cant the biggest varible is the power steering mount and pulley. I have seen pictuers of three different power steering puleys(i think it was from a vender on the board). What i did find to be correct most of the time is if you look at rage's pics is the closest pulley to the balencer is water and alt. the next is AC. the third is power steering. fourth is i think AIR pump but not sure.
there a many different crank pulleys that you can get to get the combo that you need. such as i got a 1-3 crank pulley because i am running power steering only. If you look at mine i have a gap not a pulley between my first and third pulley. I tried to get a list of part numbers for each option but between all the years and everything else that is hard to do. I hope i could help a bit I am still not clear on the whole thing and am sure there is someone else that know more that will help you out on this. Tim |

Re: Belt's & Pulley's
well i will say the hardest part so far for me to fine is the altanator top braket with the long throw the the bolt to travale on thats the hard one to find the bottom bracket they used them on all cars and trucks and corvetts i like the 3 pully my self where you use the 283 327 short water pump where you haver a gap in the middle now your running air thats a diffrent story
