Driveshaft question

I know this should be in the engine/drivetrain section but this one gets more hits.
I have new U Joints and a new Carrier Bearing, when I let up on the gas there's a small vibration, this just started after replacing the joints/bearing. It also still makes a klunk when I put it into reverse.
Time to get the shaft balanced?

Dion, when you are playin with a 2 pc shaft the "balance point" is in 1 place. In other words, the shaft needs to go back together the same way it came apart. Your 3/4 ton should have a slip yolk in the middle where the 2 halves slide together......if this is flipped 180 degrees from original assy, the balance will be off. It may just be a matter of slipping the 2 shafts apart, & turning them 180,& slipping them back together. another thing I have seen, is that a shaft that is in othrewise in balance,& has a vibe can some times be taken loose at the rear diff& turnd 180, then bolted back up to take care of the problem. as far as the clunk, my guess would be rear diff, if you have replaced all the u joints & carrier bearing. have you put a diff in that recently?

We put in a new set of gears on Friday but it was doing that before. Could it be that the carrier bearing was installed incorrectly?

if your truck is raised or lowered from stock height, you could have angles issues as far as the vibe, & may need to check/shim the height of the carrier bearing to get things "right on". The fron 1/2 of the shaft needs to be pretty much straight in line with the trans, then on the back half......say the trans point 4 degrees down, the rear diff needs to point 4 degrees up. I still have a ? on the rear diff tho.......did you loose a cap, or have a cap come loose when the first gearset had problems? Also did you put a new gearset in the old housing?

The shaft seems alright, pretty much straight out from the tranny. Bad U Joint? I'll pull it off and check the middle one.
I bought another complete Dana60 from a yard, we took it apart and changed the gears, everything looked good.

Ok, im with you now on the diff. You might check the center slipyolk to see if there is any wear(up/down, or twist back/ forth on the spline). Good luck.....longhorn

Everything is nice and tight, I can't figure it out! Could the klunk to reverse be the tranny? It shifts fine but there's a strange vibe still. I'ts really pissing me off, this truck should be perfect at this point.

D@mn....Im runnin out of ideas. If you have an open diff, the spiders will havea little 'wrap up",& make some noise going into gear. Detroit lockers(not posi), but a true locker will make quite a clunk as the coggs mesh(they will wrap up about a 1/4 turn before they mesh at times!) If you arent finding anything noticeably loose, I think i would get a cheap angle finder & check angles on the trans & the diff. If that doesnt work,& you know all the pcs were marked on the shaft for same position on reassembly, you may be due for a balance job. good luck.....69

I ran into the same clunking problem and I use to have this moaning noise (wasn't me) that would come and go continuously. I replace all of my u-joints and carrier bearing hoping that would help, and it did a little. However, after I had to replace my tranny about a week ago, the clunking and the moaning went away completely. Also, while my drive shaft was hooked up, before I changed the tranny there was over 1/4in. play rotation wise in the shaft. After tranny change, no play. I hope this helps.

By the way, when you guys say slip yolk, do you mean spleaned so the shafts just slide apart?

Yes, on the heavy duty setup the shafts slip apart in the middle. My longhorn is set up this way,& a lot of 3/4tons I have seen are this way. The 1/2 tons I have worked on have had the lite duty(hanger style) carrier........I hate them with a passion! The heavy setup will take some serious abuse.......
