Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
If you are just talking about '67 to '72 GM trucks, the 1 tons actually have a longer wheel base. The only 1 ton pickups built during these years are either 9 foot step sides or 8 1/2 foot Longhorn/Sierra Grande models. Generally speaking, the 3/4 tons had around a 7500# GVW, but the 1 tons could be anywhere from 7500# to 12,000# GVW. There were no dually pickups offered before '73.

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
The 1ton C30 have a much higher frame. The rear end in the c30 would always be an H072 in single wheel and could be H072/H110 in a dual wheel. Brakes are bigger front and back. All c30's have leaf springs. Looking at the frame the metal is a heavier gauge on the c30 compared to my K20.
The 3/4ton C20 would have either the H052(5200lb axle) or the Dana 60(5500lb axle). They could be coil or leaf sprung. That is just the basics.

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
Yep, these are correct.
The wheel base on a 3/4 ton is 127 inch. There were a relitivly small amount of 3/4 ton longhorns built on the one ton frame, but, it is a one ton frame... so it's kinda like a 1/2 breed between a one ton and a 3/4 ton. The one ton came in 133 inch, and 157 inch wheel base. Taller and heavier frames, as mentioned. all had rear leaf springs, as mentioned there were no 4X4 one tons built by GM in 67 - 72. brakes were larger, again, already stated... basicly, the one ton was a little more stout, but, still, basicly the same truck. |

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
thanks guys i,ve found a old 1 ton that is a little rough body wise but its whats under the body i want. i need a good workin truck and i think its the ticket. i,am thinkin 6 bt cummins, nv5600 trans and possibly a srw 14 bolt out of a more modern chevy. are the older rear ends better than the newer 14 bolts in the 1 tons ? also would a modern 14 bolt dually rear end fit.

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
The newer 14 bolt rears I think are rated at 6000lbs. I don't think the spring pads line up with the springs on the old frame. The 14 bolts came in a semi-floating 3/4ton version and a full floating 1ton. The rears with duals were available in 2 widths. chassis cab had a narrow housing and the dually pickup beds had a wide housing. I've been thinking of a 14bolt swapout as the H072's are just getting to hard to get parts for. I don't want to be stranded on the road miles from nowhere and no place to get parts.

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
BCOWANWHEELS, I know where their are a few of them here in kingsport I drive by them every day. Im always wanting to stop in and see if they will sell me one. from the road it looks like they have 3 72 1tons. For the rear if you go to a new DW axle you will have to move the spring mounts but the SW 1ton is the same.

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
well i did it. i bought the 1972 c30 truck today. 700.00 minus the 350 engine and 4 speed trans. i,am going to install a 6bt cummins and a nv5600 or turbo 400 with a gv overdrive unit. and that ho72 rear is going to be pulled out also. if anybody needs it contact me. the truck has 85,000 original miles on it.
i finally got me a seroious tow rig in the works. wonder what the dana 70 rears came out of that would fit this truck in srw. bob |

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
If you go with an auto I would go with a th400 I had an 92 with a Cummins and it went threw 2 transmit ions with less then 150k on it. I ended up selling the truck and going to a D-max. Does the GV O.D. require the tail section to be removed off the trans so that you could use a 4wd trans.

Re: what are the differences between 3/4 & 1 ton
Does the 5600 have the trouble the 4500 dodge has . the 4500 had a trouble with 5th gear for some reason. I read an artical on it once. didnt make since to me the chevy didnt have the same trouble. The 6 speed would just be way cool.
