Question Removing a 72 rear view mirror? glass question

I got a 72 windshield at Pic A Part and it has the rear view mirror attachment glued on to the glass.

Now I have tried paint stripper, razor blades various knives (and have the cuts to prove it) to get this thing off with no luck.

How do you get the attachment piece off the glass without scratching or busting the windshield.

I assume there is a way because to replace glass on a 72 you would have to re use this piece thats glued on.

Any ideas before I screw something up. Anybody done this?

I have just yanked them off, and 9 times outta 10, it came off with no damage.

But there was that one time.

Don't know anything about removing the mirror, but I am curious, how much did you pay for the windshield? I need one for my 72 Chevy Cheyenne C10

I got it about a year ago, (takes me awhile to get things done) so I'm not 100% sure but I think it was 35 or 40 bucks. But remember thats Pic A Part where you have to remove it yourself.

As far as 9 times out of 10....I'd be #10...plus I didn't get the mirror so I have nothing to yank (theres a joke in there somewhere).

yes... there IS a joke in there.
I think I'd be tempted to ignore it, or, if this is for the 70, just get a 90's GM mirror with the map lights on there and just delete the one hung from the roof.

Re: Removing a 72 rear view mirror? glass question

I've popped them off with a putty knife and using it as a wedge--wacking it lightly with a small hammer---lay the blade flat on the glass right up to the glued part--a light push and a little tap---bingo the mirror mount pops off the glass---if you do it with the mirror still attached, it usually falls to the floor and breaks ---then you have 7 years bad luck!!! Ask me how I know that---.hehehehehe

Well its a good thing I dont have the mirror then, I already got enough bad luck.
I might just have to say WTF and smack it! (since I cant yank it!)

I would have a pro take it off, this after I cracked my 04 Mustang windshield trying to get the stock piece off. Never again!

grab it with a pair of channel locks, get a propane torch and heat the bracket, after a minute or so youll feel the bracket start moving just twist it off....

Why dont you just put a 72 style rear view mirror on it?

Only because I have a 70 and would have holes where the 70 mirror goes.
